As in give up on the fantasy of epic battles and flying and having cool powers and being in a lucid dream all night then waking up refreshed in the morning. That just doesn't happen, especially not for newbies. Anything close only happens after months of trying, for the lucky people.
Once you get over the novelty of the concept, you find you don't really care as much. So when you do start to fall asleep, instead of "OMG ITS GOING TO HAPPEN I JUST NEED TO CONCENTRATE LONG ENOUGH..." which makes you fail, you end up thinking "falling asleep again, let's try to get some good recall in..."
Once you have that frame of mind, you slip into dreams and lucid dreams much easier, as you are not as excited. This happens to me right now, after about a 2 or 3 months of trying. When I started I was like you, and all it led me to was frustration. Once you take the laid back route, the lucids start to fall into place.
