sounds to me like you got too distracted, cuz of how you think something isn't right. |

OK, well a couple of nights ago I became lucid and as I found myself going along a street, I remembered to announce that I would like to meet my favourite historical character. after some other stuff (a bit of brief floating and so on) I found myself in the courtyard of a convincing looking house, and there were other indications I was in the right place and time. When I asked, someone gestured to me to go in, so I did. But inside there was a brightly lit area with a receptionist sitting at a desk with a telephone. As soon as I thought 'this isn't right', I woke up. How can I avoid that happening when something isn't the way it should be? Should I have tried to go out and come in again - or what should I have done? |

The first step to making a dream come true is to wake up!
I guess you should have gone along with it, went up to the receptionist and told them you were there to see whoever your favorite historical character is. |

Thanks everyone for your suggestions, if I get back to that place or similar I'll try them out in sequence. (Last night's semi-lucid was not nearly so interesting. Just packing a bag in a hurry, I said to myself 'No need to worry about it, just take it - whatever I want will be there, as this is a dream - I wouldn't try this in real life though.' Then promptly lost whatever lucidity I'd had.) |

First, a good point to hold on to is dream control will take a lot of practice. It takes a lot of exploration and familiarization with the dream state. Try to focus on the concept during your waking life as well as your dreaming life, that the only thing that's keeping you from what you want; is fear and doubt. Combat it with strength and faith in yourself and your ability. Try to fully understand who you are and where you stand in this universe. What actions will come to what consequences. Try to feel every sensation, physical and mental as strongly as you can possibly feel. Once you develop the self, you'll be able to develop your will in the dream. After all, everything in the dream is coming from you. The door not leading to the right place, was because waking life tells you that you can't always be in the right place at the right time. It's not possible. But in you dreams, it is! |

We may guess that in dreams life, matter, and vitality, as the earth knows such things, are not necessarily constant; and that time and space do not exist as our waking selves comprehend them. Sometimes I believe that this less material life is our truer life, and that our vain presence on the terraqueous globe is itself the secondary or merely virtual phenomenon." H.P. Lovecraft
Thanks, that's really helpful and I will try to work on that. |

So finally a few nights ago I reached the right place, and sat down to listen while the character I wanted to see was talking for a long time with two other people. I felt like I was listening, but was a bit embarrassed because what they were talking about was not my business, and afterwards I couldn't remember anything of what was said. Eventually their discussion was over, and 'my' character turned to me and asked me, very nicely, what I wanted. But then immediately everything went black and I woke up. |

Woohoo! Congratulations. That definitely is progress. |
