Try to make an object appear BEFORE you fall asleep.

I've been trying to intentionally make an object appear in my dreams by focusing on it before I fall asleep, for example, a Rubik's cube. But this doesn't seem to work.

It seems like the some random object that I really didn't pay attention to at all during the day might appear in my dream, but that one object I *focused* on certainly won't.

      How do I fix this?

Because dream incubation isn't that simple. Your brain is filtering through all its memories when your dreaming assessing whether they should be kept or not. The rubiks cube is not noted as important because you did not interact with it or feel any particular emotion. If it happened that you won the lottery when holding a rubiks cube or that you made a habit of staring at rubiks cubes throughout the day, or even thought happy thoughts while looking at the rubiks cube (associating rubiks cube with an emotion) then it would probably show up in a dream. The other way is by focusing on it all the way until you fall asleep after WBTB, that way it should be quite close in your mind too.

That's very helpful. That might explain why my dream journal shows up in my dreams. Probably because I'm still processing a lot of strange emotions from the dreams as I'm writing the dreams down.

Indeed, my brother once showed me this funny thing he uses for lucid dreaming. It started off with the idea that by thinking of a certain object everytime he luaghed and another everytime he felt angry he would eventually associate these feelings to the objects and vice versa.
As he always used to use a dice with words to check reality he decided to try it out. Everytime he he laughed he would think of the dice and it eventually paid off, in more than one way.
Firstly the excessive use of the dice had engrained it way into his mind, obviously his brain must have thought it was important if you used it all the time. The next thing that happened is that everytime he laughed he would remember to RC with the dice. Since then he started having tonnes of lucid dreams.
I think what we can see here is that the brain only really registers it if it seems important or linked in anyway.
Taking this into account the best dream incubation you could probably achieve is by imagining being present at a desired scene/object everytime you feel/do an action. Also focusing on the object during WBTB attempts of course will help.
