There was a thread about this someplace, maybe in Beyond dreaming. And yes, some people have done that. I wish I could do that. Build yourself a base. I'll post a link when I find it.
This one is somewhat related Finding yourself in someone elses dreams
Its a good idea and someone should really start a thread that specifically notes their progress from LD until Upon completion.
I have done this a few times. I built a house in a city which I have returned to. I also know several others who have done the same. Building a specific place/small area in a dream you can return to is achievable. However, building a whole world/civilization is probably very difficult. I am sure it's possible but have not heard of anyone doing it on a large scale like this.
Some people find something like this easy while others find it more difficult. I believe it depends on how good your memory is. Of course, no place you go back to will be 100% the same as the first time but you can get it pretty close. The size, amount of detail, and your memory are all factors here.
I have a lot I want to accomplish in my dreams now but I would like to try this out thanks for the idea!
I have actually thought about doing this and once started a thread like this on another lucid dreaming site. I haven't had the chance to actually do it however because whenever I'm in a lucid dream I always forget and do other stuff, besides I think it would probably take much more dream control ability than the amount I currently have.
By the way here's a link to the thread I mentioned: View topic - Creating and Map Your Dream World | Lucidipedia.com
I have done it once, starting from creating the planet, than an atmosphere, than a system for life and than watch the evolution happen. Problem was that I didn't really have the time to see it evolve naturally so it looked like I was watching a fast forwarding VCR tape. It's reall fun and makes you feel awesome but once you go into the city or place you made often the landscape can change or you can find yourself in an entirely different place.
It would be possible to span it over multiple lucids, which I did before when I made a character in my lucids. That was really awesome because after a while I became really good at living into my character.
I guess I could try focusing on one aspect of the world in every dream. I'm gonna try this now :)
I think it would be cool to do make a house and take interesting things you find on your adventures back to the house. I would want to so that once I get better

He calls it a persistent realm it is very interesting and is my biggest long term goal. Hope to write a book about it as well. :)
He has a pretty detailed description of it on the first page.
Also, lots of people use bottomless bags for this. Any item they put in it stays there and can be retrieved while lucid.
I did this thing, where I downloaded this audio clip of this Lady that tells you how to create your own internal universe. Basically you just sit down and play the SIMS in your head. And this is going on when you're awake, not sleeping. So I did that. I built this palace in my mind, it's gorgeous. I revisited it a few times, and then I forgot about it. Completely forgot about it... or so I though, right?
A few months later something reminded me about all this, and I was very surprised when I realized that that memory of the palace was still there, entirely intact. In fact, because it's something I've fabricated, it feels like a memory that is a lot more solid that any other memory I have.
So I suggest this. Build your world piece by piece during waking life, and then find it in your dreams. It may end up being someplace you're so familiar with, like your own house, that you start dreaming about it automatically.
Dang it, Brandon! You referenced his DJ before me. :p Personally, I haven't gotten to try it yet because of this quest I'm going on to find my dream guide (which btw is proving to be a pretty illustrious and interesting quest.) but my strategy is actually to basically record all of the worlds in a book that copies the energies of a world and uses those energies to copy everything in the world and open a portal in the book that can be used to enter said world. Think of it this way, the book is like my memory card. Each world goes on a save file and I can load the save files to access them. As for creating the worlds, I imagine a floating platform in the middle of endless nothingness that is automatically stored as a location in the book so that I can go there. Then, I go to this platform, set myself intent on transferring into a world from the fall, and leap off the platform. However, these are untested techniques. So don't expect them to be surefire solutions, just ideas.
Nice. :) I feel like when it comes to techniques for creating things, you have to find one you trust. Like hyu said, you have to beleive that the world is stable and will stay there.
I'm working on something like this as well.
So far I've only been constructing it in waking life, constructing the visuals basically.
As a starting point I use this fantasy world I created for a story I started writing a few years back. For now I'm sticking to one island with lots of waterfalls, my goal is to use these waterfalls as teleportation portals to older dreams or dreamlocations I've visited in the past.
Typical how this whole thing originated from one story but it's allready creating enough material by itself for a whole new different story.
Sometimes i feel like my everyday dreaming does just that, create a world within myself. I reuse dream settings in my dreaming all the time, i recognise places my brain created. I wonder if it would work for me to create a setting while awake, and then dream in it at night. Will try!
I'd imagine it's possible, however you would need to have very good dream recall and memory in general as you would have to remember all the changes you made to the area the last time you were dreaming. Something like a house, fortress, a town and maybe even a small city might be possible, but an entire planet may not be. Atleast not possible for a casual lucid dreamer.
The amount of information you would have to remember might be too overwhelming. But if you put a lot of time and thought into it, it MIGHT be possible, but I would not bet on it. You would likely have to accept that not all the details will be perfect and you would have to live with a general recreation of what you remember.
Which honestly would still be flipping awesome.
I don't think stuff above planet is all that hard. I created my first world years ago, second one two years ago inside a book. Can go and visit places in both and they are still there and the same people show up and all. Just need to actually believe it will happen/work/etc.
It seems very possible. I'm no expert at this dreaming stuff, but I would guess it would help if after you built your place in a dream, when you wake up, you DL entry should only focus on what you built, where it is, and how to get there. I would make it as detailed as possible. Then, you should record yourself reading that DJ entry aloud and listen to it before going to bed every night. I would listen to it several times. If you have a real good dream recall and memory though, I'm guessing you wouldn't need to do this.
I've never attempted creating a world. I'm still very much in the stages of finding the best technique for me in terms of gaining lucidity and I'm still experimenting with certain powers/abilities within my dream. I think once I have all that figured out I will attempt to create a world.
That being said I have a DC that I go and visit a lot and they always remember our last encounter. I found them last night and they said they had missed me as it had been a while. I think it's been maybe 3 weeks since I last saw them in an LD. So I do have a character that always stays the same and has memories of my LDs and that requires hardly any effort on my part anymore.
I am very into cityscapes and megapolises... so naturally my first thing i wanted to construct was a giant skyscraper that went into the clouds km's high. i did this several times. the tower would be different every time, and the tower is big enough that i can explore inside place and meet many different people. Since it was my tower, people would respect me and address me as the owner. I could also call any one of the many people that worked in this place to help me or guide me.
as i dreamt more... i sometimes flew out of the tower, or toward it from a far. it would be giant highways, going in and out of this giant city, with skyscrapers like you wouldn't imagine. a mega-city if you will.
i have returned to this mega-city several times. yes, every time it is slightly different. the only common theme is that it's fairly futuristic, sometimes far future, sometimes near future. and the towers are hundreds of floors.
I only ever see the "big" picture of the city while i fly over it or around the buildings. whenever I land somewhere or fly into a building, the world becomes that room or that building and it could be anything inside those buildings.
I don't have much control over how the city is, or what i see or can explore in these cities (i often go back in lucid dreams and non lucid dreams). It is like a city i have never been to. every time I'm exploring some new part of the city that probably didn't exist before. Sometimes I'm exploring particular buildings, sometimes I'm exploring particular areas of the city (like the port, or the "interstate" highways).
Hyu's DJ is fantastic LD inspiration. Creating a persistant realm is also my primary motivation, it seems to me that dreamers such as Hyu, RavenKnight and Nomad who construct worlds have the most narratively rich dreams.
I have created a world inspired by the cosmology of Paradise Lost/His Dark Materials/Greek Mythology/Gnosticism/Shamanism/Various aboriginal spiritual systems/HP Lovecraft (... yeah, really), that I have begun exploring in my dreams. The main characters are recurring DCs.
When I first started LDing I wanted something like that. After reading DJs I got a little discouraged because they all sounded pretty much like the LDs I had already had.
I found Hyu's post about his recurring DC and I started reading. I then found a link to his DJ and couldn't stop being amazed. I found out about waking nomad and raven knights crazy adventures later. Then I talked to hukif and found out a lot more about it. Very encouraging, I am just working on teleporting now so that I can put all this knowledge to use. Even if I can create a realm, if I can't get back there at will, it is useless.
I think one of the problems is that beginners look at these worldbuilding LD masters and think they can go straight to that and get frustrated. No one picks up a violin thinking they'll play Mendelssohn's violin concerto from the start, you learn scales and whatnot and build up. But it is ultimately achievable.
Think about it, there are no physical constraints, the mind is plastic, it can change according to your attitudes. Hyu covers this in his DJ post. I utterly believe that with practice I will have the ability to lucid dream multiple times each night. Aim for the stars, land in the moon's eye (or something like that).
Very good points. :) I like that post.
I think that aiming for the stars and landing in the moons eye is a good idea. This is why it is a good thing to set short term goals that are hard to achieve, long term goals that are hard to achieve, and super long term goals that are nealy impossible to achieve. You don't want to get discouraged, but you also have to make sure you know where you are at and where you are going.
