Question Dream Control at End of REM Cycle?

      Hey DV!

So last night I had a FA towards the end of my sleep cycle. It was around 8 hours after falling asleep (8 hours is a lot for me). When I became lucid I spent a few minutes trying to stabilize the dream, but nothing worked. I know that I can do it because I have done it 19 other times! In addition, the dream was very unstable and I had small feeling of my physical body as well. No matter what I did though nothing worked! When the dream finally ended I tried to DEILD for 20 minutes without moving a muscle but to no avail. I think this was all caused because it was near the end of my sleep cycle. Towards the end of REM do your dreams start to collapse and become less vivd? Is it hard to re-enter a dream when REM is ending?

      Thanks! Your help is appreciated

Yeah, I think you were just at the end of the sleep cycle. DEILD works best in the middle of the night as well. Not in the morning.

Some dreams are just blurry and hard to get anything out of it. Be excited you got a lucid though, every lucid counts for experience, just don't let it get you down.

Were you attempting to LD? or did it just happen unexpectedly?

Yeah that's what I was thinking, but I couldn't be sure!

Haha nice man, thats a cool idea.

I guess if your in your lighter REM cycle wouldn't that mean your dream is not as intense therefore not as vivid? Just an assumption.

Well if you're on your way out of REM (which is where most of your dreams happen) it's only natural to start waking up or getting a blurry dream. 8 hours of sleep, in my opinion, is not optimal for lucid dreaming. I find I get my lucids after 7 hours of sleep, up to 9 or 10 hours of sleep is when I dream almost all the time because the REM cycles are longer. REM cycles occur every 90 minutes early in the night, but are even closer together as you sleep for several hours. If you don't sleep more than 8 hours a night, which should still be enough though, I'd recommend you get to "know" your sleep cycles better so you're able to know exactly when it's best for you to wake up. That way, you get more out of your REM cycles

Yeah that makes sense. For me I almost never sleep a full 8 hours, so it only makes sense that my body is getting out of REM. thanks for your help!

Yep that makes sense lighter REM=blurry dreams. It just kind've sucked that I couldn't make anythin out of it. No stablization technique would work! Thanks for your help!

Another option is that you didn't have the right mindset when you first stabilized so when you tried a different method you weren't expecting it to work.

I know someone that has a lot of LDs that said sometimeshe would just sit there trying to make it brighter and more clear, but just manage to wake himself up. If you stabilize for too long it will wake you up. He however learned that after initial stabilization if there was still blur, then he would just deal with it because some dreams are just blurry. Plus when you get involved in a dream (flying, walking, talking, moving, summoning, changing scenes) it should lose some more blurryness, just pay attention to when you start losing in order to stabilize again. Most people know when they are about to lose a dream. I blink when I am. I can convince myself not to blink and stabilize, but I will do it again when I start losing it again.

That makes sense but in every one of my lucids stabilization was not a problem. I couldn't think of another reason why it wouldn't work besides the fact that there was maybe nothing I could've done. Like you said, some dreams may just be blurry. I guess that was one of them... Thanks for your help

Don't forget that although rare, lucid dreams have been reported on N-REM sleep. Something to consider when you're counting the timers ^^

That's a good point! I heard that somewhere, but I didn't know if it was the truth or not.

Yeah, I have dreams in NREM all the time. One time I was laying in bed and I slipped in a dream that was blurry, but I was talking to people and found out where I was and even shot a basketballand made it. People asked why I was acting so weird and I told them that I was too tired to see very well. I woke up and pretty much no time had passed. It was just strange. Blind dream, better than the dream of being an old lady. That through me for a loop.

Sometimes is the morning I will get up and get ready for the day and if I lay back down for 30 minutes or so I can recall a dream or two! I don't know if that is REM, but it might be a good chance to WBTB/MILD.
