This is such a good thread, as I feel every dreamer has experienced that feeling of partial lucidity or struggled with control. I love the idea of downgrading demands to suggestions. I've always felt like we have a very unique relationship with our subconscious. In my personal ideology I believe the subconscious governs all that is beyond the conscious mind, and it has messages to be conveyed to the conscious mind. These messages are packaged in dreams for us to experience so it's twofold; there is an overarching message to be conveyed in the dream to us, and we need to be conscious enough to receive it.
This of course flies in the face of most modern lucid dreaming practices, we practice to control, not just to be passenger. But I've always felt the conscious mind is like the rider and the subconscious is the elephant, the rider believes he is in control because he holds the leads, but in reality the elephant knows he is ultimately the one providing the journey.
Such is the relationship between the dreamer and the dream. We intend, or encourage the direction, but if there is a message to be conveyed, the mind will prevent the action. This may be connected to a sleeping logic center or just lack of frame in general. But I find when working With my silent mind, rather than feeling like I am struggling Against it. The suggestions tend to be better received.
