      Same problem!

I've had this same problem a number of times man. Normally I like jump and try and fly but just end up gliding back down to the ground, and another time I was trying to fly out of a window but just couldnt get myself moving!

Ive heard a lot that if you expect summin to happen in a dream it will, so next time just expect that ur gonna fly, or expect that a jetpack will appear sumwhere in the dream or expect wings to sprout out of ya, there must be a way dude.

Hello, I have actually found the easiest and most asertive way to fly is simply command it. Before you go to sleep abserve a feather, notice its light weight properties, imagine yourself as the feather just kind of drifting in the wind. Now between sleep and wake (that moment were you fully fall into sleep) create your dream scape like a field, someplace really open. Imagine that feather again, now you again as that feather, you should feel really light as if no care can keep you down. Pick a point such as a tree or a rock or even a cloud now pull yourself to that object and will yourself to do whatever you want. If you realize your dreaming and tell yourself this, willing something is quite easy.

You can alter this anyway as you wish, just my own lil technique. Its actually that you do create your own due to the fact of boundries. If your constantly trying to follow "directions" in a dream you end up losing that focus.
You seek in others what is in your self,
a commonality, a bond, something missing from your own being to complete yourself with the company you keep.

Yep thats what works for me just have no doubt in your mind that you can't fly. I was in a lucid dream once where I got into an old car. I said to my self "where are the keys", they appeared in the ignition. I then proceeded to drive the car but it was old and didn't go fast at all. I said to my self "I need a faster car". Up the road appeared a much newer car. This suprised me alot when I woke up at how much your thoughts at the time influence the environment of your dreams.

I can fly because of only one reason. Every time I saw someone complaining how flying is hard, I thought to myself that was rubbish, as anything was possible in a dream. They must be doing something wrong. You can fly in dreams, it's a fact. If you want to fly, you just can, simple as that.
See what I'm getting at? I refuse to believe it's possible to have trouble flying if you just know you can. And in dreams, you can fly. So, you know you can, ergo, you can fly.

Simply assuming you can fly gives you that ability. I know it's hard not to doubt yourself when you've faced failure before, but now you're armed with new knowledge: It's not possible not to be able to fly in dreams! Know this, and you're already halfway, the only thing left is to go an do it!

Gosh, don't think I can help you there. I had my first flying dream last night, and I just willed myself to fly, kind of like Superman. Try not to think about it, just feel like you're flying.

Visualize what it's like to fly with all your senses. First 'feel' like you're flying, then 'see' what you'd see when flying. When you've thought out a thorough simulation, bunch up your knees, jump miles into the air, and just fly. Don't even think about flying, just think about moving through the air. Side to side, up and down, as long as you don't overthink it, it becomes as easy as walking.

Actually he is able to fly just fine but he "could do nothing except that". I suppose he needs instructions on Wet Dreaming and pulling Lucid Rabbits out of Lucid Hats, and whatever else it is that the Lucid Dreamers of this page enjoy between and during their flights.

You're not helping. Go be sarcastic somewhere else.

Hi there Tom. Have you ever tried falling down? Jumped off a skyscraper, or out of an airplane? When you're falling down you can feel yourself soaring through the air. It's as close you can get to flying without actually flying. I'm sure you'll find yourself to be able to 'pull up' before you hit the pavement.

Or try this. Ever seen The Matrix? Run the jump program. If you succeed jumping from one rooftop to the other it's just a small step to take control in mid air.

      fly like mario!

I couldn't get myself to fly one night, so I thought about a time when I've seen someone else fly. Being in a hazy dream state, the first thing I thought of was super mario world. Put on a yellow cape, run really really fast, and then jump. Jumping is easier than flying for most, so try to jump so that you go higher and higher and higher. When you're way the hell up there, go ahead and look down. At this point I found myself falling gradually, but once I had come down a bit I found it was easier to stay in the air than to return to earth. To the lazy subconscious, landing on the ground requires generating a new environment, whereas remaining airborne requires... nothing! I have a hard time just taking off from the ground, but any technique that involves starting from a high place works fine.

Leo, re-read his post carefully (I inserted Commas where they should be):

Having experienced dreams in which I was and was not able to fly, I'd say the most important thing is the ultimate conviction in your ability to fly.
In one, I was trying to fly, because I thought it would be fun to do. Something I'd kinda thought about when thinking o things to do in a lucid dream. So I tried some of the methods from various threads on this site. Nothing worked.
When, more recently, I simply thought to myself, "just do it. You can", I found I was able to. I crouched, and just concentrated, and when I took off, I knew it was the firm belief that did it. There was apprehension, sure. I'd failed before. But this time was different. Before, I had been just going through the motions. This time, though. This time I flew on wings of purest conviction.
It's the belief that does it. The expectance of results. Not the desire.
      Yeah.

All of these have been good suggestions, and I'll have to come back to this post when I sit down to update the Dream Flying tutorial.

Speaking of that, it's right here: http://www.dreamviews.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14412

Yeah, great advice all round, with the exception of Leo and that Jesus dude

The way I see it, it's all about belief and expectation.
You can either try to increase your belief that you can fly easily, or you can make it easier to believe that you can fly easily.
The difference is something like this:

      1) Use shortcuts (mentioned earlier). Look behind you and find a jetpack lying there. Use it. Then while flying, remind yourself that the jetpack is an illusion. Throw it away.
Basically anything that makes it easier to believe that you can fly. Use it to strengthen your .. 'willpower' ?
      2) Practice your ability to focus on what you want, and expect things to happen. Meditation and visualisation exercises may help for this. This takes time and patience, but is well worth it IMO. This helps for more than dreaming.

Both things help, but approach the problem from either end.

      flying

When i have an LD, my favorite way is to do a superman position. Place both fists in front of you and dive into the air, and imagine just rocketing off the ground. You also should make yourself beleive that you can do it. I have flown really fast with this technique.

Dreams have meaning. To be able to fly in a dream means something. It is an indicator of one's spirituality, creativity, awareness and maturity. It is not something that just anybody can do. It is a test of character.

Indeed, it is always my first step whenever I go lucid, to pick up and fly away. Do you know why? It is so I can leave behind all of the Non-flyers. Those who can pick up and leave with me make excellent company, but those who can't fly are better left behind.

So it is not just a question of technique. It is a holistic problem which involves your entire being. As it stands, now you are a low person. I suppose you must either learn to live with that, or grow as a person and undergo a vast metamorphicious. You need some quality.

I'm sure you know what I am speaking of. Can you not compare yourself with other people in your World. Are you one of the finest people you know? I don't think so. Flying in dreams is reserved for people with a well developed notion of their self-worth. They are not of the Earth but almost automatically rise up to the Heavens. If you do not feel this way about yourself, then you really need to get started on the road to self-improvement. The good news is that with most people not endeavoring at all to achieve the least bit of quality, it is easy enough to soon pass them up.

Sounds like arrogance and elitism to me. No offence intended.
I do however strongly disagree with your opinion.

The only part about flying that involves personality or character is the strength of belief and discipline you hold.

I don't know, maybe I'm weird, but flying is the one thing that I've always been able to do in lucid dreams. (the few that I've had) I don't even really have to think "I want to fly" or anything like that, I just....do, it's hard to explain. The next thing I know, I have complete control over my speed, altitude, and so on, it's everything else in my dream that I have to concentrate on to make things happen.

Are there people who are natural flyers or something? Is it this easy for anybody else?
      Dream on.

By the way you write Leo, it sounds as if you have no trouble at all with anything you do in a lucid dream. Your posts read as if you have them every night as well.

Maybe the reason you have such elite dream skillz isn't because you are so much more spiritually evolved than the rest of us mere mortals, but because you are so convinced you are.

Yes, it does. it does indeed sound as though those who can fly are special and talented and those who can't, aren't. So? That does not make me wrong. But it does indicate that you would NOT tell the truth if you suppose it might make you sound "elitist".

So you admit you will lie in order to sound politically correct. Placebo, I have discussed your morals before, and wish not go over the same subject again, but honestly, honesty and integrity really do matter, and someday even you might eventually figure that out.
