      I'm very new

I have hade only a few lucid experiences. But enough ot know I am capable of it. I simply do not know how to trigger my ability to control my surroundings and face the things that frighten me. I only seem to remember my nightmares. I want to be able to control them. I am going to start keeping a journal and analyzing my surroundings, however any extra advice would be appriciated. Sometimes I am afraid to fall asleep.

Hey there. My first lucid dreams were nightmares, as a child.
At first I didn't think I had any control at all, but after figuring that out, it was actually very easy for me.
If you still have problems controlling the nightmare after you've become lucid, then try laughing at it. Just laugh hysterically.
The last time I did that, the nightmare exploded

Other useful abilities I used: ghosting (like the twins in the matrix) and creating forcefields (similar to eg. Violet in The Incredibles)
With those, you don't need to feel in danger at any time, because it either can't reach you, or if it does, it can't touch you substantially

You are god of your dreams

Before you go to bed think in your mind the words:
"In my dream world I am god."
"I created these things in my dream world."
"It's my universe to do anything I want."
Repeat the above words like a mantra for a while. If this is too much then just repeat the first line.

This might seem a little egotistical. Still it's true. You create your dreams.
      You take control.

You don't have to believe you are the god just that you are 'a' god of your dreams.

That should at least make some changes.
      Are you dreaming now?

      RE: I'm Very New

Buy 'Exploring the world of lucid dreaming' by Stephen LaBerge. It pretty much answers all your questions.
      Hope that helps.

It's a really wierd sensation when something eg. tries to bite you, in this state.
Like a cold feeling in your bones, but not exactly pain. Very wierd.
      YMMV

I have that too. It's really weird.
I have dreams that i'm fighting a dog or a bear. I hold it's jaw open so it can't bite me. I agree it is not at all painful, and the dreams are never scary... they're almost playful.
