      A paradox... as it were...

I've read everywhere that when you enter a LD you should remain calm and not get too excited so as not to suddenly awaken. It has been my experience that it is necessary to remain calm for that very reason. My question is how do some of you go about having amazing experiences without just waking up? Is is purely a control thing? Please post some suggestions as to how I might resolve this problem!

      -Phil

Edit: As an example I once had an LD where I took off to the stars and I saw a comet. I proceeded to smash head on into it but got so excited at the prospect of that kind of power that I woke up.

And as always, Thanks for the input!

For me it kinda just depends on what I'm getting excited about, and definitely how lucid I am.

Usually for me if I'm getting excited about something I'm doing, I don't wake up. If I'm getting really excited about the possibilities available to me, though, I kinda lose focus on what's up with my surroundings and that tends to wake me up. If I'm low on lucidity, getting excited about anything pretty much makes me open my eyes.

In this regards there is a similar problem in Astral Projection, where they warn the Person just exiting the Body to remain very calm, or he or she will be whipped back into the body at the least show of disturbed emotion. The instruction is to move away from the Body by as much as 15 or 20 meters. After sufficient distance is placed between the Astral Projector and his or her body, then any expression of emotion is no longer a problem. It is a matter of getting beyond the Sensitivity Range.

Well, perhaps there is a Sensitivity Range in Lucid Dreaming also. I've notice myself that before I get to really interesting parts of my Lucid Dreams, I first levitate up and fly away for some distance, whereupon I automatically will lose altitude and come down into the Intended Dream Scene, where all the really neat and cool things happen and I can be as overwhelmed as I please without any adverse effects.

Anyway, perhaps you can try this. In your next Lucid Dream, after you stabilize your Lucidity, by looking at your hands or whatever, then either Levitate at least out of the room you are in, or calmly exit the room you are in. By creating this distance from the Originating Point of the Lucid Dream, perhaps you may be exiting out of what the Astral Projectors call the Sensitivity Range.

But then again, in the instance you gave of flying off to a Comet and bumping your head, you certainly would have gotten well past any Sensitivity Range. But there I can advise you not to bump your head.

Leo, that sounds like a solid idea. I'd imagine, given the similarities between astral projection and lucid dreaming that making some distance from the origin would help. I'll definately try it tonight and report back!

Also I like Night's idea that you get woken up by the thought of all the possibilities of the dream rather than by getting excited about a specific occurance. It makes sense because you are focusing on that one event so it acts to further stabilize the dream, as if I were to examine my hands.

Anyways thanks for all the help you guys!

I have astral projected before but haven't been able to Lucid Dream. Is astral projection easier than Lucid Dreaming or does it depend on the person?

I've lost quite a few lucid dreams early on due to excitement. Just looking around the dream provoked such a rush of emotions that I just snapped out of a dream. It took some thinking and a couple of practice dreams and I was able to take that feeling under control. Try to do the same, it's really not that hard...
