I just finished watching Waking Life and there's a part where a guy talks about 360° vision (or seeing in all directions, if you will).

It kind of messes up your brain just thinking about it and trying to visualize that. But it could be possible in LDs.

Have any of you ever tried it?

Sorry, I haven't LD'ed yet, but I have a pretty good idea of what 360 vision is like because as a cyclist I have this thing called a "third eye" it's a mirror strategically attatched to your helment that with a slight turn of your head allows you to basically see in every direction, it's a little freaky but after you get used to it you kinda wish you had it on all the time. I may just be an insecure individual but in crowded places like malls, I always hate being scrunched up with a lot of people and people walking all around me while I frantically search for a path of travel. I can't count the times I longed for my third eye, it just makes you feel better knowing where everyone is and being able to see in any direction instantly. nothing can surprise you or sneak up on you.

I haven't thought about it but doing that in a dream may be nice.

Yeah I just happened to see a clip of that part of the movie on youtube, I have no idea how it would work, also I wonder if you could have like 6 arms.

Yea, but that permits losing sight of the direction you just turned from. Anyways, I would like to try it when I have a LD.

Best idea I could think of it is that it would just like your peripheral vision, that extends back further on both sides.

How you could focused on all 360 degrees at once, I have no idea - as that is not even possible with half that amount.

In lucids, I think that people mistake a quick shifting of focus of behind/infront of them as 360 degree vision.

I'll try this in some of my lucids as well.

well, with the third eye I could see in any direction, but I couldn't look in every direction. You are right in saying that I had to focus my attention away from my immediate path of travel. I don't know if the human brain is capable of actually looking and focusing on the entire 360 degrees of the world at one time. I'll have to try that if I ever manage to stay lucid in a dream long enough. If the theory can be tested anywhere it ought to be able to be done in there. still though are lucid dreams outside of first person perspective? I've seen in dreams only 1st person and 3rd person, and I don't know if you could control yourself in third, I know I haven't in my non-lucids, in a recent dream my shirt got caught on the back of a parked moving van and I was trying to unstick it without tearing it, I wasn't lucid but I did feel as if I was actually there trying to unstick it. I was in first person when I felt that way though, when I see outside myself I feel like a detatched observer.

can you actually command yourself to see in all directions? would you need to imagine some kind of special helment or something? hmm, I think it would be hard to trick my brain into doing something like that, something that on the basic physiological level is not concievable. It would be most impressive. If anyone tries this I would like to hear the results.

good movie first of all, i've seen about 8 times over the last year. i've only had a handful of lucids that have lasted long enough to really experiment w/ " what is possible", but i'm planning on trying the 360 deal. i personally think that it's more than possible as well as having as many arms as you want. from what i've been doing in my LD's it's only limited by what you think limits you( for most people this seems to by their ability to imagine that such things can be done). if all of exsistence is comprised of thought, why can't thought rethink itself

Yeah, should be interesting to see the results of this. It's just basically impossible to think of seeing in all directions, if you think about it, thats why I wonder what it would be like in a LD.

I guess I'll find out. That would be a cool task for February- attempt to see in 360 vision and report the results

I did this once (inspired by waking life )
      It looked kinda like this:

(except there were no black spots, and everything kept its 3-dimensionality)

      It wasn't very mind blowing

If you want to blow your mind, try moving your perception into an inanimate object (try to see the world as the object does).
That was a perceptual fuck-up that I'll never forget
(I would elaborate, but can't think of a way to explain what it looked like )

That sounds cool BillyBob, you seem to have excellent dream control.

The retina is actually build so the density of cone cells increases as it approaches the centre, so detail arounfd the centre of the focus is much greater than your peripheral vision can manage. I suppose one thing about 360 degree vision is not only extending the plane of view but creating a uniformly detailed view.

Billy, were able to be focused on everything at once? Or was is like you could focus on a general area, and the rest of it was like peripheral vision.

If you had full focus - that's pretty awesome.

Imagine doing more than 360 vision : vision ALL AROUND you.....(sounds crazy doesn't it??)
....like you don't even exist...actually.....I'm atheist but I guess this is what God's about (sorry if it's off topic)

360 vision, that'd be so cool to try, even just once. I've done it but it would be really nice to be able to see all of your surroundings all the time.

I've always envisioned 2Pi (radians! ) vision as normal looking, except that if something goes off one edge, it immediatly comes on the other. I immagine that spherical vision could be pulled off in the same way, but I have yet to try either.

I could see everything (notice what things in all directions were doing at the same time), but I couldn't see intricate details or anything like that
(there wasn't even a point where I could see clearly, it was all in peripheral-like vision)
