I have only successfully flown a couple of times, each of them have been without much control. But recently I cant seem to get into the air at all. Last night in a LD, I told myself, "hey this is a dream I CAN do this if I really want to," but still couldn't get off the ground. I've read lots of posts and the flying tutorial but wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem and how they fixed it. I don't have this problem with doing other supernatural things - cant understand why this is so hard.

how I learned to fly in dreams is not getting off the ground necessarily. I learned by jumping out of windows from a second story and up! when ever you are on higher ground, take the advantage of jumping off of it. jump out of porches, off of roofs, climb and jump off a tree!
after that you should be able to help gain some dream confidence that you can fly, then you'll be able to get off the ground at will
also, what REALLY helped me, was falling out of a dream airplane :bigteeth: maybe you can try to induce a similiar scenario?

You really just have to believe. Gravity does not exist, but don't even think that. Just flap your arms a few times and just fly. Don't think about it, just feel the wind catching under your arms until you're in the air, at which point you should be stable.

I've always been able to fly in my non-lucids (didn't have a chance yet to try it in a lucid)....I just looked at the top of a building I wanted to go to and....up you go! Or try jumping several times and then make a super jump....:D
-
Good ideas, I'll keep trying. I also just found a post about looking at something far away and "zooming" to it as a way to learn to fly. I'll have to give that a try. I am pretty good at jumping. I can run and then jump about 50 feet or so which feels pretty exciting.
I'm not sure about the whole, "just believe and you can do it," part since when I'm lucid I do know that it's possible to fly, I just can't for some reason.

ahh the joys of flying! i am usually in the air before i even realize im in a dream. but on those instances that i want to go fly, i usually just jump in the air, spread my arms, and there I go! but if one CAnt get to fly, try jumping off houses of roofs, or trees, or skyscrapers, or space stations! (*ponders this, remembers stuff, laughs hysterically*)
just believing in urself should be good. try growing wings, or a jet pack. it should work out in the end if you try enough! good luck

I had my second lucid dream last night, with little control still unfortunately. I tried to fly for the first time, and I couldn't get off the ground either. It kind of made me angry, I kept telling myself it's a dream and I should be able to fly, but I couldn't.

I also find it helps if I'm on higher ground, but usually I take a really big running jump. Also, I find it helps if I look up at the sky (as opposed to my feet to see if I've lifted yet) and just imagine myself shooting into it as I jump. I sure hope this helps you!
-
When I flew, I looked up at the sky and jumped. As soon as I looked at my feet I floated back down. I ran to my trampoline then jumped and that seemed to work better. Maybe look up at the sky until you're at the right height...

I've flown a multitude of ways. I've used my arms as wings (not bird wings, like airplane wings. stationary), I've started with hovering and then pushed myself forward, I've done air-swimming, and I've used the "push off the ground really hard" method. The key to all of them is focus. Just know that you will fly and focus on moving through the air.
Also, unless you're using air-swimming, don't think of it as moving your body. Think of it as moving your point of view. It's hard to explain. It's like when you're watching a movie, and they're a sky shot over a city or a forest or something. There isn't anyone flying up there. It's just a view from above. Try thinking of it like that.

Well it seems to me that whenever i have tried to fly in a dream things dont work out as well if i try to hard, so just simply try to imagine yourself doing it, or you could just know/believe that you can, always works for me :)
-
When I fly I just hold my hands out to the side parallel to the ground and I just float up, after that just by look in the direction I want to go.
I'm not always lucid when it starts, if I'm not I usually become lucid just after I start to float up. I guess flying is one of my sign, but if I try to land or anything else I'll wake up or lose my lucidness(is that a word? :? ).

The fear/inability is all in your head, so the first thing to do is tell yourself "I CAN FLY!!!". As for how to do it, I have only flown once (my second Lucid Dream ever where I didn't know wtf a LD is), but I have also seen this suggested by a couple Lucid Gods (not me). What you do is go on top of something high with a long shear drop, and no where to land without go splat (in my case it was a waterfall). Then you take a running start and jump off spreading your arms and trying to soar like an eagle. It may even help to flap your "wings" (arms) rapidly like a bird. I can't promise you that this will give you an amazing flight where you have total control, but it will probably at least give you a nice gliding run to the bottom, like a glider (thats what happend to me). Even then though it is one of the greatest experiences of your life. (no joke)

Ok just relax, visualise the moment and take it. You can fly, you will fly! Stay positive it will help you to lift off.
Just imagine yourself lifting off, its like how you walk in a lucid dream, just use your mind to do all the work. After a while it should become a lot easier.
Amé made a Flying Tutorial, so be sure to check it out.

You might try some easier things first to build your confidence, since confidence is just about everything you need.

Just remember Nike... just do it.
Seriously, if you want to do it, just... do it.
Meaning don't make it complicated. Easiest way to do stuff with your imagination is jsut doing it, not reasoning it. Even in your awake and conscious brain you don't rationalize your imagination when you day dream... you just think it. So just do it.

I don't actually remeber how I fly in my dreams; but I know it isn't hard for me. My sugestion is to try "feeling" it. Can you remeber the feeling you get in when you go over the hump in a rollercoaster, or something like that? the feeling often described as "your stomach dropping away"? well, I'd imagine this, and think of myself flying away. Another one I read was to find a pool, dive under the water, and slowly float up; when you get to the surface, however, keep feeling that floating feeling, and keep going up into the air. you might not end up with much control, but at least you'd be in the air.

You must beleive, if you haven't any luck than picture an invisible staircase in front of you. jumping off of something high is helpful as well, (just be sure its a dream)
