I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I'm having trouble controlling my LD's. This may be due to my inexperience, but all of the very few LD's I've had fade from memory pretty quickly, and while I'm lucid, there's little I can do to control or prolong them.

I guess that what this comes down to is a solicitation for advice from more experienced LD'ers. How long did it take before your LD's cleared up? How long before you were able to extend them?

I know what you mean. I have had 1 LD and it was 5 seconds long. Fuzzy and brief.

The first thing you should do in a lucid dream, is stop and admire your surroundings. Focus one by one on getting all of your senses. (eg. What does it smell like? What does it sound like?) This should help a lot to prolong your dreams past the premature awakining. It should also give you more control.
I had a strange dream last night...

Adanac is right, using your senses definitely work. The more you use your senses, the more it feels like you're really there and not in your bed and the less likely you are to wake up.

Also, spin like a crazy person. Spinning has a 96% chance of prolonging the dream according to this study. For me it's closer to 100%. If you're new to lucid dreaming or you haven't had a lucid dream for a while, you might panic when it happens and go: "OMFG, I'm dreaming!" and then immediately wake up. What worked for me in those situations was to immediately start spinning. It didn't make my dreams go on forever, but it pretty much guaranteed I got another 30 seconds each time I pulled it off. So immediately when you feel you start losing control, spin, spin, SPIN!

The last piece of advice I will give is to try to stay calm. This can be hard at first, I know, but try to stay calm. Don't rush off to have sex with Britney Spears and learn to fly and breed dragons. Take your time. Take it slowly. It won't be your last lucid dream, so just take it easy, then it will also last longer.

when my LDs end, it is always abrupt. one moment i'm fully immersed, the next, i'm in my bed. spinning does help me though when the dream is really dark or i want to go someplace else.

heh i had sex with a hottie on my 2nd or 3rd LD i flew too. omg breeding dragons now THAT i have to try.

Thanks for the advice, everyone! I'll try to remember that next time I manage an LD.
