      Problems...

I've been trying to become lucid all summer, now I am actually having some success. The only times I can become lucid are in the afternoons, not during my normal night sleep, and I can't keep the dream going for more than a few moments. I decide that I am dreaming, think of something to do, but cannot really carry it out. I have done this several times, past the point where I am just too exited about becoming lucid and therefore am not in control anymore.

Does anyone have some advice for me on how to have a lucid dream at night, and also how to prolong lucidity?

Seems like when I have pizza for supper, I usually get lucid during the night. I've heard rumors about cheese and, apparently, they're true...

On prolonging your lucidity, perhaps you could just go along with the dream instead of immediately trying to take control. I always get too excited, too. My plan for next time is to just relax and explore my dream world, rather than trying to summon things or fly. That stuff can come with time, when we get "used to" becoming lucid and build our skills.

It is true that gaining control takes some getting used to, so indeed it's probably better to start with just the exploration of the oniric world. My recommandation is to remain calm, and to speak to yourself (inside the dream) : "remain calm… everything is going well… stay focused…"

Focus on the actual dream environment and objects, instead of the dreaming state. Eventually, after some LD occurrences, when you have mastered the ability to remain asleep and in the LD state, you may try to summon people, objects, environments and events.

p.s. Eventually, if this happens, I recommend to start with the summoning of small common objects. Don't forget to stay focused.

Cogito, for those new to lucid dreaming, I advise that you don't try to set the lucid world on fire your first few dreams.. don't try to do tricks, summon people, etc. Simply go with the flow and take it all in. Get used to what being lucid FEELS like so you can ground yourself in your dreams.. that's when the tricks/stunts can happen.

Your first few dreams simply act like a tourist in a new place.. go sightseeing and take in all the different colors and sounds. You may try to increase your vividness by confidently declaring "increase lucidity" or "clarity now" but that would be the extent of control I would recommend for struggling dreamers.

I still have to remind myself the moment I become lucid to get "grounded" in my dream (i.e., make it as lucid as it could be) instead of immediately racing to do something before I lose lucidity.

One of the tricks I use to "ground" myself is to "touch" things. By touching.. I mean really "feeling" them. Get into how they feel.. are they hot, cold, smooth, rough, etc. (this also helps me remain in the dream longer).

Just remember that "the deeper the level of lucidity.. the better your lucid experience should be".

As for how to have a lucid dream at night.. if you don't want to get up in the middle of the night, all I can recommend is doing reality checks during the day and trying to DILD/MILD.
