      Losing the ability to fly

A few years ago, when flying became the trigger that allowed me to DILD, I was able to keep on flying, high and fast, but without much control over the dream content(s).

The more I gained control over the elements, the less I was able to fly, at least not as high nor as fast. Now, I can easily induce to a lucid dream (WILD), but the ability to fly by myself fails very often. To "levitate", I have to command a levitation ability to occur, and when it does, it's not much more than a common levitation.

This has been noticed by other members. Feel free to share your experiences in this matter (the loss of the flying ability).

I find it hard getting in the air, so climb trees or buildings and just jump off

You're not losing any abilities because you don't have them to begin with. What you have are decisions. It's not about how "well" you can fly. It's about can you get past the mental block of THINKING than flying is a power and thinking that you can ever lose this "ability". You always can fly in your dreams. Even if a wizard dc tells you that gravity has increased 10 fold and now flying is physically impossible, you can still fly. It's all about what you subconsciously expect to happen. Nothing can stop you from doing anything, because it's all in your head.

You might start by like trying to zoom into the air Neo-style if you've ever seen the second or third Matrix movies. That always gives me the psychological feel of "oh well I must be getting ready to fly really high and reallly fast now". Tell yourself you are the one. Tell yourself you are god and can do whatever you want in your world. You can. Just jump up and fly. Or conjure up a jet pack that can't go wrong.

Urk--! That doesn't sound like a good idea to me! If you fail, chances are you wake up prematurely. That'd suck if you were WILDing.

I recommend you don't sweat it. If it doesn't work the first time, you're thinking too hard about it, so hard that it is counterproductive. Leave it alone for a while, and come to it again when you have time.

I've had a problem that matches yours exactly (it used to be a dream sign, but once I began becoming lucid, it became harder and harder to do!). Only it was with phasing. I couldn't phase through glass anymore. After a while, I stopped caring. Now I can phase through stuff moderately well again.

Jumping off things is great! And it is a good idea! you don't have to worry about waking up from fear of falling. Falling is even more fun than flying when you know you can't be hurt.

To levitate, I would suggest practicing levitating other things first. Try reaching out with your mind, and feeling an object. then you can just kind of lock onto it and move it through the air. once you get a good feel for how that works, you can levitate your self the same way. and presto instant flying skills.

I used the Douglas Adams (Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, for the ignorant) approach. In one of his books (Don't remember which one), he said "Flying is easy. Just throw yourself at the ground - and miss." The time I tryed it, I was on like, 3 stairs, and that little boost was all I needed. I jumped off, spread my arms, and floated. Although I had to dive slightly to get speed, like I had the wingcap in Super Mario 64. Most likely because my mind adopted the first available point of reference.

Another thing I've always wanted to try is to first learn some telekinesis, then eventually lift myself with TK.
"Of course it is all happening inside your head...but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?"

Yup, in my opinion thats the only best way to fly. And the best way to learn.
But I love to jump from high places too.

It's just a mental block, you can do it man...if all else fails, try throwing yourself at the ground and missing ^_^

I think Rainman is right on the money, the only reason you can't is because you think you're losing the ability. You think you're losing it so you don't expect it to happen so it doesn't. The only reason people need tricks is because they think they need them.

      Ability restored

Thank you all for your replies. The ability to fly high and fast was restored a few weeks ago — high and fast meaning to be able to race with a Boeing jet by my own self, which I had not done in a while.

Last week when I became lucid, I just went up a hump, and I just walked straight off it instead of stepping down while looking straight ahead (ergo, don't stare at your feet). I ended up floating and hovering around the scenery, and then took off. This was a planned endeavor to trick myself. Not to ignore the ground below me, but to ignore that there was no descending as I walked off the hump.

It was one of my best flying dreams I've ever experienced, and there was no problem with controlling the flight (not that this matters in my method of ascension).

When I try to fly I have to focus to stay close to the ground. If I don't do that I soar upwards into the sky. Sort of like I'm falling upwards. And then I wake up, exactly as I would if if were falling down.
To control my flying I sometimes imagine myself being a tiny dot. Like an energy particle. That way it's much easier to fly anywere at immense speed.

I have lots of flying dreams, I'll follow common sense and imagine myself flying during the daytime, (along with RCs of course ) and I expect if i persist long enough, that may result in a lucid dream

I tryed jumping out my bedroom window two nights ago in a long lucid because i thought it would be cooler than just jumping into the air. I started to think what if it fails and i crash into the floor and wake up.

Thats exactly what happened. I don't think i will be doing that again any time soon.

      Walking in mid air

And… moreover, in a recent LD I found out that not only was I able to fly high and fast again, but I was also able to stand up and walk or run in mid air, as if there were an invisible sidewalk under my feet.

Next attempt would be to make this invisible road go upwards, or in another direction which would not be horizontal.

What I have done with success is to create a hole in something, a wall, a tree, and fly through that. this usually gets me started.

I had 3 lucid dreams last night and i couldn't fly in either of them. I could sort of fly in one of them but not properly, this is annoying me now.

I think it might have something to do with the lucid being early in the night, most of my lucids are because i use my induction method after about 3 hours sleep and i tend to have a lucid about half and hour later so it is an early rem lucid.
