I can't remember what I wanted to do.

When I WILD, I know what I want to do in a dream. When I succeed, it usually works out fine.
But when I fail, because I got distracted somehow, I fall asleep dreaming something random and become lucid after a false awakening anyways. The problem is, when this happens, I can't remember what I actually wanted to do in the dream.
      Is this common?

Quite common. Do what I do. Before you go to sleep, use a sort of MILD. "When I have a LD tonight, I will _____." Just repeat the goal to yourself, believe it, and KNOW it's true. It works most of the time, and if I have a DILD on a night I don't do it I often won't remember. In other words, try and do it every night.

      write

As TaNK stated, it is quite common.

I also try to WILD while thinking of (or mentally repeating) my goal. I might even envision myself becoming lucid and thinking about how I will go about accomplishing it.

What I've also done is to actually write 5 times on a blank piece of paper what I want to accomplish before trying to WILD.. sometimes just the act of writing it down cements the goal in my mind.

That whole MILD thing... man I just can't seem to get that work! I *wish* that I will have a lucid involving my given task, but I never NEVER *know* for a fact and believe it will come true.

It's probably alot easier to remember to do something if you become lucid via a WILD as you basically never lose your awareness/consciousness.

Sound like a good idea. I rarely took a look on my notes when I was in school, as I just remembered what I wrote. I wrote it all down because of this anyways.

I write it down in my dreamjournal. Every evening, I begin by writing:

      - Header with day/date (this sets my intention to write dreams, and hence remember them)
      - The methods (if any) I want to try this night
      - The goals I set myself (dreamgoals)

And I make sure I have enough room to write everything down I'm going to remember!

One thing though, for me it's important to stick with a dreamgoal for some time. It takes a little while, usually, for a goal I set myself to really begin showing in my dreams, even my lucid ones. Changing my dreamgoal every night is very counterproductive, it just ends up with me not remember any when I do become lucid. So a certain measure of consistency and persistance is needed when I set myself goals.

      Hope that helps,

      So Redrivertears--
According to what you said about having dreamgoals and how it takes a while for them to constitute in your dreams (let alone getting lucid), about how long does it take for you to complete a lucid task of the month? I guess I should check if you even do them first but... yeah... how many nights before you can remember to pick a card out of a deck or to create an animal out of water?

      Hey there,

With no disrespect to the Lucid Task of the Month, which I think is a wonderful initiative, but I like to set my own goals and things to do. I'm really not all that interested in trying to make a glass dog

How long does it take for a goal I set to translate itself into my dreams? There's no telling, that's the problem with dreams. It depends on how lucid I am, on the type of goal I set, and how you measure succes.

      - How lucid am I? obviously, if I'm so full blown lucid that I remember what I ate for breakfast that day, well, I will recall my dreamgoal even if I set it the night before. On the other hand, if I'm only semi lucid or very fuddled, I might not remember a dreamgoal even after weeks of setting it and even after having done it the five nights before!

      - What kind of dreamgoal? I find that the more "basic" your dreamgoal is, the easier it is to remember. The more abstract and complex, the harder. Giving an example to illustrate: Remembering to 'have sex' or 'fly' or 'run faster then a train' are generally easy to remember, and will usually make it in my dreams real quickly, in only a day or such. Remembering to find an abstract 'dream guide' character and having a discussion with him/her/it on how I can improve my chances at WILD, is a much more abstract dreamgoal, and a lot harder to remember for me.

      - How do I measure succes? If I set as my dreamgoal that 'I want to fly', is it enough to simply float above the ground, do I have to have control? How much control? How fast should I fly? Again, how you measure succes is important too. I find that if I set an intention there's usually traces of it in my dream, but they're not always clear. Suppose I wanted to find a famous actor in my dreams. I might not succeed, but I might find a tv where they're playing a movie with that actor in it. Is that a succes or not? Usually, the "traces" can find their way in my dreams real quickly, but depending on the complexity of the goal, the full thing itself can take longer.

These three, and some other factors combine to make it really hard to say how long it takes. Although for reference, if my dreamgoal is easy and I'm not seeing any result in a week, I will begin to wonder if I have to adjust something. If it's complex I usually give it two-three weeks.

      Hope that helps somewhat,

      -Redrivertears-

Coolio! Thanks for the insight. Even though I've been faltering with my ways of lucidity in the past, I'm pretty much set on not stopping trying until I get it. Especially because the thoughts of my day creep into my dreams VERY easily. For example, yesterday I took a walk and saw a band playing at an outdoor theatre. Last night, in my dream (non lucid), one of the vague things I remember is talking to a guy that was sitting on the steps of an outdoor theatre. It wasn't a huge thing and I was like "OMFG I'm dreaming because I saw that today" but at least it made an appearance, like what you were talking about with the movie star. Once again, I was not lucid but still... thoughts come to me easily

      Thanks again!

Yeah it's common, it's weird but...the dream self and the waking self seem to have different objectives/perspectives at times. I mentioned this when I said I love swimming in the ocean and in pools in my waking life but in my dream life, my dream self is terrified of large bodies of water and pools. (And for the record, I've never had a traumatic experience with water or anyone else I know of)

Wow that IS interesting... Especially how most people like experimenting with their favorite things to do in real life in the dream world (i.e., I played guitar with Dimebag Darrell after he was killed... i wasn't lucid but it was on my mind... also we were in the weight room at my school lol...)

But really thats super interesting! I am going to be forever puzzled by that!
