Lightbulb AMAZING!?! I have never heard of what just happend happening!

OK! So I used to have an account here I believe but i've forgotten what username I used, and it was around 3 or 4 years ago so I've made a new account for what just happened.

So my cousin has been having this habbit of falling asleep on my couch.
In the past I have told him about Lucid Dreaming and he had said he'd had 1 or 2 lucid dreams in the past I believe. I myself have not been having lucid dreams at all for about 2 years despite my efforts.

Tonight, My cousin fell asleep on my couch again! He started talking in his sleep, so I asked him if he was dreaming, and he said "No!".

Well I wanted to make sure so I asked him "What are you looking at?"

He said "Quiet Man! Can't you see i'm trying to cook!?

      SO!

I said to him "Well actually I want you to stay VERY CALM"
"You're actually DREAMING right now, did you know that?"
Still talking in his sleep he said "No I told you i'm not dreaming, I'm driving!"
I said back, "You're driving now?"
      and he said "Yup".

So I tried to keep him talking while i looked around my house for anything I could record this event with, knowing that I had a sleep talker telling me what he was dreaming and responding to my questions outloud!"

So I questioned "What are you driving?"
and he said "A White Van"
so I said "And who's in the Van with you?"
and he replied "Well, You, Me, and the Girl"
so I asked "Who's the Girl?"
and he said "I don't know but shes really HOT!"
heh so being 24 I tried to get him to touch her breasts and I told him she told me she really wanted him to.
He said back to me "No way Myles! I dont need videogame boobs like you do"
      AH HA HA HA
So I figured seeing as how we'd been playing this game called Burnout for Xbox, that he was probably dreaming he was playing the game, which I had been doing while he was sleeping 5 feet away until he had started talking in his sleep.
So I decided I'd have a go at turning up the graphics a bit and said,
      "Doesn't everything look real!?"
and he scoffed at me "OF COURSE IT LOOKS REAL! IT IS REAL!!"
I knew then that I had him.
So I said "Can we talk for a minute? I really want to talk to you for just a few minutes, can you pull over?"
and he said "Ok, Hold on let me pull over"
To make sure I had him I restated that I wanted to talk back and forth for a FEW MINUTES.
When he replied "Ok, lets talk!" I took it as ok If I keep him talking this will be really awesome"
I was still running in my mind at how i should be videotaping this but I didn't even have a good microphone or anything ready to be used at that moment.
So I said to him "I really need to know what is your favorite car?"
and he said "My favorite car? Hmmm I guess that would have to be a Lincoln Contenental"
I said "Perfect! Cause I just bought you one and I wanted to make sure I guessed the right kind of car!, It's right around the corner at the car dealership"
      He said "No you didn't"
and I said "Quick there it is pull into the driveway"
"It's around the other side of the building under a blanket, there it is, Are you ready!?"
      and he gasped "Noooo Waaaaaay"
and i said "Ok im going to pull the blanket off"
"THERE! Is it the right color!?"
and he goes "Yea, ITS BLACK!"
So I said "Here's the keys, it's yours now, go for a spin"
He said "I can't, you cant afford a Lincoln"
Heh, so I told him I'd just sold the videogame i'm making in real life, and
I bought it for him for his Birthday"

I had forgotten that due to his religion, he had never had his birthday celebrated. He didn't get presents a card or anything ever.

I realized this when he said "I don't get Birthday presents"
      So I thought PEERRRRFFEECCTTT.

You know what I said to him next?

I said "I know man, that's why I got you this Black Lincoln Continental for your Birthday this year, to make up for all the times nobody gave you anything"
"Get in and go for a drive"
      He started humming and hawwing
so i added "Good you finally got in the car.. oh well atleast you got it started, now where are you going to go?"
He said "I don't know man, I don't know whether to go Left or Right"
I said "It doesn't matter just go for a cruise."
      and he said "Okay"
So then I asked him "Is this fun or what?"
and he said "Yeah THIS IS FUN! AHAHA MAN IM FLOORING IT"
I said "Do you remember me giving you the car?"
and he said "Yeah i'm driving it, of course I remember it YOU JUST GAVE IT TO ME LIKE A MINUTE AGO"
so I said "Are you going to remember this for the rest of your life?"
and he said "Of course im going to remember this"
I added "For the rest of your life?"
      and he said "Deffinately."
I was trying to make it so he would remember the dream as clearly as possible when he woke up so I said "Okay, well I want you to look around and remember all this even back what we did a few minutes ago and put it in the part of your brain that will make it a really clear memory for a long time"
and he said "Okay Myles" in a sarcastic but obliging tone.

So then I had to talk him into not crashing the car which was the objective in the videogame we'd just been playing before he fell asleep, I told him that in real life car accident hurt people, and he said "Ah Ive been in lots of car accidents"
      So to change the topic,
I asked him "So you seem to be driving professionally and carefully enough that you can hold a conversation safely, If you could have anything happen next, what would it be?"
He replied "Well I'd like to pick up my girlfriend hitch-hiking, but thats not going to happen"
so I said "NOoo Way! Look there she is right there!"
He said "Shut up man! I'm trying to pull over to pick her up"
At this point I told him I'd get in the back seat of the car, and that she could ride "Shot Gun" AKA Front Passenger.
So then I realised that if his girlfriend had just gotten in the car, that he would probably want to talk to her, or that she may be talking to him and I didn't want him to get mad at me for interrupting anything, so I waited a few seconds.
Unfortunately but also fortunately, at this moment a neighbor knocked on the back door of my house.
I told the girl Jackie that she could come in but only if she was really quiet and played along. I told Ben (My Cousin) that the whole time Jackie had been hiding in the back seat.
HA! he said "Good, I hope she's got some weed!"
So figuring that dream drugs might not kill brain cells I told him she did have pot and I would twist one up.

Now Jackie is in real life watching me talk to my cousin who is dreaming.
She said a few words playing along that she was in the car, and Ben said Hi to her and I began asking him about what he saw, so as to proove to her that he was infact in a dream and that I was talking to him and manipulating the dream for him.
At this point Ben asked "Hey man are you going to roll that weed?"
and I answered "Yeah I just finished rolling it, here take it and light it up!"
At this point he actually physically leaned forward and reached out his hand to grab it, so in real life I reached forward to his hand to give him an imaginary joint.

He seemed to go into double vision and started swatting at my hand.
As I type this I realized that perhaps he was seeing 1 hand in the dream,
but 'sensing' my real hand which confused him?
As he fained to get the joint between his fingers he woke up opening his eyes and he looked at me and said "Nooo waaay dudeee"
I said "DO YOU REMEMBER THE LINCOLN!?"
and he very confusedly said "Yeah I remember the Contental, the girl, the dealership, everything."

HE ACTUALLY REMEMBERED THE WHOLE DREAM AS IF IT HAD JUST HAPPENED.

He said "Holy S#!t, I fell asleep on your couch, I gotta go home" and gave me 2 cigarettes for giving him the car and the girls.

Man, I've had lucid dreams, and I've heard of dream signaling with eye movements, but I had since hearing about the eye signal thing wanted to try and get a dreamer talking in their sleep just like I have just successfully done with my cousin! IT WORKS!
He was definitely talking to me about the dream out-loud, telling what he was doing / seeing, obeying my guiding suggestions, and remembered the whole thing when he woke up.

      AMAZING.
I told him that i'll try it again next time he falls asleep and starts sleep talking again, and he said that would be fine.
I've wanted to try this exact scenario for around 2 or 3 years and just by chance it all fell into place this evening.
Damn, Now I wish I talked in MY sleep!

      As an end note:
At the beginning I tried explaining lucid dreaming to him, that he was in a dream and could and should become lucid, but he wasn't having any of that lucid dream 'nonsense'. I even tried to get him to look at his hand and see 6 fingers to which he replied "I don't have 6 fingers, and if I did I'D BE MESSED UP." So that is how I decided to instead try and talk him through a dream that I thought he would really enjoy.

      Please REPLY!!
      And thank you for reading!

Wow, that's pretty cool. I've never heard of that happening. I've talked in my sleep and my mom tried answering back, but she didn't have it go on very long. Once she said that 2 of my siblings were asleep and talking to eachother.

Freaky. I'm a touch suspicious about him moving - sleep paralysis and all - and I vaguely wonder if he was just stringing you up. But still...

      Pretty cool.

I've talked to my brother while he was dreaming before, but he was nowhere near as responsive as your cousin was in this story. I'm very skeptical.

Wow, my cousin twice removed talks in his sleep, once I even got the pin code for his cell phone out of him. I'm going to try this as soon as I get a chance

When I was on holiday the girl I was sleeping with, actually that sounds wrong, she was there with me, sleeping... And she was talking to me in her sleep - saying things, when I replied to her she wouldn't respond to anything... Although she did move a lot and say a lot, none of it in reply to what I was saying to her.... You sure he was not pulling your leg?

Lightbulb I don't think he was faking it, but I will ask.

I don't think he was faking it,
But he is at work so I can't ask him to make sure yet.
I will for sure ask him as soon as he shows up at my house to play videogames again later.

Reasons I don't think he was faking:
      -----------------------------------
When he was talking to me he kindof was talking like a zombie.
When I Very First asked him what he was doing, he said "I can't get this pattern to stay straight"
When I asked him what he was cooking he actually replied "White Bread".
As for the sleep paralysis, He was reaching between the front and back seats of the car while driving supposedly. He also does swat around in his sleep alot thought I usually don't know what hes swatting at or even if he's dreaming.
When he woke up he seemed really disoriented, like still half in the dream and now half awake.

I will be sure to get a straight answer from him about all this when he shows up after work.
I must say though, Until it was said here that he might be tricking me, I was 100% sure what had happened happened. It was not my cousin screwing with me, but then again it was around 11:30 PM so who knows.
I am now 99.6% positive he was really dreaming and talking to me at the same time. Thanks for the minus 0.4%, my credibility feels much better now.

That's pretty sweet if it's true! I've always thought of doing something like that to my mom or brother telling them "You are dreaming... This is a dream..." since they really don't believe/care for lucid dreams. I think they need to experience it first, especially my brother. He thinks people who care so much about their dreams are weird (I get smacked when I mention it to or around him ).

      Ok...Milo seems to think this is pretty important, so here goes;
I don't actually remember falling asleep here-- I just remember being woken up by a knock at the door...but then, I was hardly sleeping-- it was more of a drunken stupor. Heh. And I never remember my dreams vividly, if at all. For some reason though, the white cargo van is a very distinct memory and the responses he read me today are amusingly familiar. I do know that when he started talking to me about the Lincoln I was irritated- I knew he was talking to me and I was trying to sleep but that awareness came and went, in a way. The visual aspect of the dream was mostly gone and I was somewhat semi-conscious, on and off...I was alternately aware I was asleep and yet fading in and out of consciousness but I couldn't wake up. Heh, it was pretty fucked up. I remember distinctly the blue towel that was covering the car, and the white Dodge van...I completely remember driving a car, and being bugged by people talking. I hate that. I was irritated and trying to go back to my own dream and also trying hard to wake up.
Uh...in any case, I didn't know where I was when I woke up...can't acutually remember the moment I awoke either...but strangely alot of the details are very familiar.
      Anyway...

      Well that's all he wrote.
Have I made a discovery here?

I had a room mate once, that I could talk with while he was dreaming. One time he sat up pointed at nothing and told me to be careful not to trip over some stuff that wasn't there. I never talked to him as much as you did though. that was really cool. wasn't sure I was going to read that whole post but it was pretty entertaining.

I know very few people who talk in their sleep so can't comment on whether your mate was winding you up or not milo. One of my aunties talks loads in her sleep, she will answer people if they ask her something and her answers are all pretty normal as though she is awake, the best thing is she always seems to tell the truth when shes sleeping and when we were kids my cousins always used to get out of her what they had got for christmas lol It was really funny, they would wait til she was napping then whisper...'watch this....'

Weird thing is, when she is awake she is really nice but when she is sleep talking she gets pretty grumpy if she is talked to too much as though we are interrupting her.

My daughter talks in her sleep too but it is all complete gobbledegook, for example she was once talking about some carrots that had gone bad, I asked her which carrots and she replied 'the clocks right there on the wall, jeez cant you tell the time or something'

Briliant! I have trouble believeing this. But none the less - it is brilliant!

BTW: I find that this happens in most dreams of mine. I know I am dreaming, and the people will not believe it is true, before I "soldomy" prove it to/for them...

I've done the same thing before, Milo - and I believe what was actually happening was the same type of thing a hypnotist does with his subject. Your cousin may not have been completely in a dream, but instead a totally relaxed state in which he was open to suggestions and experiencing hallucination-like visual signals.

Pretty scary how the mind completely controls what we refer to as "reality" or "experience"

This post should really put a little more perspective on the story... seriously, why is it so hard for some of you to believe this? Given how it was written and the respectable content I think he's plenty credible as well as his cousin.

All of you that immediately go for the BS factor instead of thinking "what if" sadden me...

Myles, great story, and extremely interesting...

      WOW.

I don't think it's qualitatively new. Sleep talking is common, particularly in children, and some people do lots of it. Intuitively what our subject (:-D) says makes a lot of sense; you'd expect him to be sort of half-asleep, and without very vivid imagery. Given the length of time it's not suprising he felt he was stuck in this state, trying to either wake up or go back to sleep, but you wouldn't let him :-). It's all very credible.

Voices can definitely enter dreams. I don't think it's that rare to sleep-talk a response. But quantitivly - having an extended conversation with someone with visual dreams, that you both remember - that's something special.

I've read of hypnosis being used in combination with sleep - I forget the exact details, but it would sound quite similar to what you did. The main difference is that I read of sleep-hypnosis being used for therapy, and it included suggestions to forget the dream - the exact opposite of what you did! I'll try to chase up a link later; it might be quite useful, but Google "sleep hypnosis" or "dream hypnosis" doesn't seem to get very far; maybe "hypnotherapy" will turn up something.

Whether it's worth following up - well, there are two questions. 1 - How reproducable is it? 2 - What is it good for . I dunno about the real-world side, of how many people would be interested in talking to dreamers. The other side of the question is that this could be limited by the amount of attention you have to pay to the outside world - having to listen and talk must surely detract from the vividness of the dream.

I'm very impressed. Major kudos for staying calm, taking advantage of your cousins state, and telling him to make sure he remembered you giving him the Continental!

I'm going to try this with a friend who sleep talks obbsessivly to the point I can't stay asleep at the sleepovers we have, he usualy always talks about runescape, and very clearly he will physicly get up out of bed and open his eyes, I'm not joking, he once handed me an electronic guitar tooner and told me to play runescape on it, he would talk to me as if I was playing the game with him at the moment, I was able to talk to him a bit, but strangly I never talked to him about lucid dreaming, I'm going to ask for his promission to start talking to him in one of his rem stages (which I can tell perfectly since he falls asleep instantly and I know the times for rem after sleep) hopefully I can get this girl to apear that he kept talking about in another dream of his, I have a tape recorder to but I can't upload it to the internet, it's like basicly one of those old ones.

But yeah I'll have a peice of paper beside my bed, and write it down, do some extra sleeping the day before.

I wanna be the very best
      Like no one ever was
To lucid dream is my real test
To control them is my cause

This reminds me of a scene from the movie "The Science of Sleep" where Stephan is falling asleep while on the phone and the girls asks him to tell her what he sees.

And that scene reminds me of when I was in High School and dating this girl. We would talk on the phone so late into the night that we'd start falling asleep. I remember a few times she'd start in with some weird delusional shit and I'd tell her she was dreaming. She'd go "NO! You'd understand if you were here!!"

      I can see this.

I really am curious about this. When I lived at home with my parents my sister and I used to go into my nieces room(who lived with us) while she slept and would talk to her. Most of the conversations were nonsensical but we could understand her and she would respond to us. Of course we thought it was hilarious. We'd ask her if Aliens were invading or if other such random things were happening and then we would try not to laugh so we would not wake her.I wish that I knew then what I know now. I would have tried to send her on a fun adventure or maybe even got her to go lucid.
