      Way to practice flying

So last night I had a lucid dream and just practiced dream control... I got dream flying down to where i can take off flying without even jumping.

      Heres what I did.

I started by jumping up and down repeatedly, trying to fly. Basically, what I had to do was to fail to imagine gravity, and then to fly to just feel the force pulling me in a different direction.

To stop flying, all I did was cut the force, and let the gravity return to normal. I practiced this several times.

Looking where you're flying is also important. You can visualize flying without doing this, but if you look sideways you may end up losing your dream body (which can be annoying).

Taking off from the ground is more challenging. In order to take off from the ground, you should first feel the force of gravity holding you to the ground. Then gradually imagine not feeling it anymore, and finally feel a force pulling you upwards, like a balloon. If you need a push off, do so. You will be able to fly faster and be more controlled though, if you dont require the push off.

I prefer wings but I've been meaning to learn how to fly that way.

when i flew (or rather floated) in a LD before i knew what LD was, it was more like a small hop and then i imagined a gust of wind carrying me up.

once i learn to control myself more i'll try your method

hmmmm Last night I jumped and managed to fly ...

I think its because I believe it was actually possible, I am quickly learning that all you have to do is believe for something to happen ....

Belief is a key part of flying; not so much believing you're going to fly though, as beliving that you arent going to fall. Try not to focus too much on the fact that its a dream. Thoroughly understanding how you're going to fly both while awake and while dreaming is also key.

To me the key to flying is not thinking on it. No thought whatsoever; meaning I do not concentrate on my belief in flight as much as just going through the motions and-- zoom. Off I go. I guess the belief is implied nontheless.

Yes but in order for it to work like that, you have to not be disbelieving, which means that belief needs to come into play. At least until you just accept it.

I think it is as with any other action in LD's. My first lucid dream i had no problem flying. A couple sloppy take offs because i wasnt expecting it to feel so real but thats about it. Simply understand it is a dream, you dont need anything special to fly, no wings, no gust of wind to carry you up, no bird to follow, you just have to jump up and fly its not hard i promise.

Although a big set of dragon wings do sound kind of fun

      ah, the trials of flying.
i always get caught up in the act of flying and forget to focus on the LD (a novices mistake perhaps?) and end up plummeting. thanks for the tips though! ill be sure to try them.

Similarly, I get caught up in flying and end up losing my dream altogether as the scenery is replaced by nothingness and fog. Its quite annoying

lol i dont have this problem but then again im very confident in LD's. When things start to blur just remind yourself the reason this is happening is because your FLYING! Obviously something you couldnt do in RL.

The way that works for me is to not think about flying at all...

Usually Im outdoors when trying to fly so I just look up and imagine a bird. Next moment a bird comes into view flying away so I begin to think about following it. Next thing you know your following the bird. Simply take your attention of the bird and you will notice that your flying. Flying is just a secondary effect of following the bird.

Although since you are not concentrating on your body, you might leave and followthe bird without it... has not happened to me though

I once had to turn gravity 90 degrees to escape a nightmare. I jumped off a balcony and fell into the side of a tree. I then woke from the shock.

I used to have problems flying but one thing i found worked for me is to use my legs, like i'm swiming just with my legs... i can always fly this way!

I guess it may have something to do with conditioned reflexes of motion: during the day, when you're in motion most of the times you're using your legs, so using your 'dream legs' may "trigger" the sensation of motion, even if its flying motion... thats just a theory...

but it does work... just jump in the air and move your legs like your swiming...

      my 2 cents

Heres what i did to learn. I jumped up into the air a few times to get the feel of it. I shot way to high and way to fast. Then i tried to just float up a little slower and level out on my belly. After getting that down i could take off no problem, it only took about a minute.

MY trick to staying up is to tense every muscle i can ever so slightly and this provides the stable manueverability i need
