      Lighting control

I've always heard that you can't change the lighting in a dream, and that that's why it's a good RC to hit light switches. But in my last lucid dream, I found it too dark and shouted "Get brighter!" and as commanded, everything got lighter. It went from looking like nightime to looking like evening(Not bright sunny day but not nearly as dark as it was).

I have noooo idea why the light switch thing is such a popular dreamsign.. I just don't get why lights malfunction is most people's dreams. lol It just seems so strange! If you can conjure up a complex scenario with pink elephants and dinosaurs and little green men, why can't you make a simple electrical circuit work??

I think there's an explanation for that, but i dont know it. Im sure the other vets on this board know why.

Ahem... Well there are many reasons why it could be a common dreamsign and this is one of them...

When one person says its a deamsign for them, another person does it as a reality check. They might tell other people aboutit and they try it too. So basically, if you EXPECT the lights not to work, they won't. Understand...? If you don't... well... in a nightmare, let's say you are running away from a criminal. He has a knife so you think, "Well at least he doesn't have a gun.... then he will get a gun because your fears usually come true in nightmares and then in other dreams what you expect will hapen will happen...

Also, the right side of your brain, the logical side, is "turned off" while your sleeping. That's why dreams aren't logical and you think they are logical until you wake up. To demonstrate this, try doing some math during a lucid dream... it's impossible. During a dream (I don't know if it was lucid or not) I tried to do some math and when I came to the answer I thought it was right even know it was something like 324 + 2354 = 9300

That cleared it up for me. So a RC check could be almsot anything. It doesn't even need to be more specefic than visualizing something. If you're dreaming, visualizing something would probably create it. In the physical world, obviously not.

Well, if your in a lucid dream and visualizing something, it doesn't always come unless you FULLY expect it. If you "hope" it will happen or come it might not...

And yes, a RC check COULD be anything, but some things don't make much sense. Try to do things that require using your logical part of your brain. This includes doing some math in your head (except sometimes you might think the answer is right so you disregard it even if it's wrong) or writing or something. That's why looking at numbers or text is such a common reality check because it requires the right side of your brain (the logical part; the inactive part while your sleeping).

      Woo hoo I was helpful.

The reason light is difficult to modify sometimes, I think, is that it is a principle of the dream. When you can modify it, it's probably because the dream was made for light changes later on. Also, the logic central does shut down, but another thing is that these neurotransmitters in the brain which are responsible for keeping memories and the imagination unrealistic are counteracted during REM sleep, allowing it to seem real and trick the mind much easier. Hope I got that right.

I found it easy to change the lighting. I just shouted "Get brighter!" and it worked.

      I'll add some things

First, there's no electric current behind the switch, so no physical laws to
      follow.

Second, it is very hard to change light levels instantly, at will and while looking at the room.

I guess it's just too much information to process in a split second amount of time.

*theoretically* it is easy to change light levels: look away from the room, use verbal command and look back. Room will get brighter.

YOu're right. EVen when I commanded my dream to get brighter it didnt happen instantly like a switch. It happened quickly, but not instant. It faded brighter. So I'll start flipping more switches.
