      total recall***update

When I was a child, from ages 0-5 I lived in Brazil, and spoke portuguese and english. After leaving Brazil and coming to the US, I managed to forget how to speak portuguese. I do reckognize the sounds and the accents of portuguese. Hard to explain, but it's very comforting for me to hear it. I was wondering if, while lucid, I could somehow access this and speak it again. I don't believe that it just "left my brain". I believe that it's there, but I've forgotten how to use that part of my mind. Any input would be much appreciated. I still have a lot of family in Brazil, and I'd love to be able to better communicate with them.

That's very interesting! Yes, I think you may be able to access some of those memories through LDs. A few people have posted that they were able to use LDs to brush up on some 'real life' skills, such as playing guitar, singing, etc. So, give it a shot!! I don't think that that language has completely left your brain, either.

that'd be sweet, one of my lifetime goals is to speak fluent french (and dutch, but french first)...

You know what'd be funny? Listen to this (this is the crazy shit my mind comes up with when it wanders on these topics):

Ok, you're lucid in the dream and you ask a dream character "take me to my language processor," so the DC points at a door. You go in there and you see a liquid computer, so you throw in a bunch of merlot (french wine) and the whole thing turns red. You wake up the next morning and you speak french, but you can't for the life of you remember how to speak english. So your parents get mad and ground you, but you don't understand them, so your dad ends up having to call the mental ward, and you get put in a padded room all because you speak fluent french. This, of course, is one of the stipulations of the Patriot Act. Deal with it.

      que?
An idea is something you haven't fully considered.
A belief is merely a repetitive thought.
A conclusion is simply where you stopped thinking.

Im suffering from something similar like this to. I was born in brazil, but then moved to the states after one year of staying there. I have no memory of my childhood there. I've been told by my parents that I didn't speak untill I was age 5. I even had to go to a special school to get me talking. my parents told me that the reason i didnt talk was because there were so many languages around me(spanish, english, and portuguese). Supposedly, my parents claimed to have talked to me in portuguese all the time when I was little(i don't remember anything before I was 5-6 years old). Right now I can't speak portuguse(i have trouble remembering the correct words and I cant pronounce them right), but I can understand it some of it. but back to the point....

I've been trying to learn the language here and there to, but it's a lot harder than I thought. I'm gonna try this, whenever i get a lucid dream. gameover, i know you have more lucid dreams than I do, so post the results when you do it ok?

btw, are you able to understand it to to a degree or can you only distinguish whether the language that is being spoken is portuguese or not?

I know it somewhat. Oi. Tudo bem? And other simple convo. Very basic though, and it's been learned from past trips to Brazil. I recognize the sounds so much, and Im still around it a decent amount. Im near some Brazillian family here in FLorida, and get to hear when Im around them all. I used to actually remember portuguese words and not know what they meant. I can still vaguely rememeber a kids song in portuguese, and Im sure I butcher it but I know kind of how it sounds. It feel slike its just so covered in dust and buried under crap that I'm not used to accessing it. But Im thinking if I was in a deep hypnotic state(perhpas a dream state) I could access it again.
How about you? You remember nothing? I'm sure it's all there. Do Brazillians have memory problems? Judging by us two....

Yea, I have trouble following someone say.... telling a story or something. I can get completely lost in that. kids song? is it like a nursery rhyme? the only portuguese song I can remember is the happy birthday song and I to would butcher that if i tried to sing it.

But Im thinking if I was in a deep hypnotic state(perhpas a dream state) I could access it again.[/b]
Do you mean by medidation or the state before you enter a dream(hypnogagic imagery, sleep paralysis?)

I can only remember some words, but they have no real hold on conversation. Say someone says some word, I'll then go, Oh yeah! that's the word, now i remember(then a few hours later, ill forget). I know deep down I know the language, it's just hard to access it....just like you said about the dust thing. My brother's in the same boat except we're opposites. He can say a few words in portuguese more then me and I can understand portuguese more than him. It's very slight though.

it's tough though and sometimes embarrassing. My brother and I are one of the only ones who can't speak portuguese in the family(big family) and some of them think that we dont know any portuguese so they just talk to us in english instead(when they do this i feel like they dumbed down the atmosphere of the conversation and making me feel "lesser") it's hard to explain, but I like it when my relatives talk to me in portuguese. it makes me think that they have faith/knowledge in us that we aren't THAT dumb in the language. And then when my parents took me to churches, they would introduce us to people, they would talk to us in portuguese(and i would understand them) and I would have to respond in english making them think i know nothing of the language.

I want to go and live in brazil for a while just until i can pick-up the language, but i dont know when. I wish they had portuguese for foreign language at school. I picked up spanish only because I was hoping that it would help me in portuguese since they are so alike.

Do/did you go through the same thing with this? got anything else to tell?

i think i'll stop now...the post is getting long

The story of my life. My brother and I had the same thing, but he lived there for 9 months after graduating highschool and picked it up really quick...so now its just me... I love it when they speak portuguese with me, but they're impatient and they all know english.

Thats the best way to learn, and is why my goal is to move to Brazil within a years time. Maybe one day in the future, we'll meet up in Brazil and talk about our lucid dreams in portuguese.

I was thinking during REM, in a lucid dream, I could maybe be creative. Like talk to characters in my dream that represent my subconcious(which they are in many ways) and see if I can get information out of them. ANd if I could get just one DC to speak portuguese, I think I coul ddo it to. I dunno, I'm formulating a plan.

And I had a ridiculously long LD last night, for what seemed to be an hour, and I totally didnt even think once about portuguese......rrrrrggh

Well, after a 3 day dry spell, with no LD's, I got back on track with a nice long lucid dream, that was very, very, clear. I did the WBTB wethod, only it ultimately was a WILD, cause I never drifted awareness. I attempted to see if I could access some portuguese in my dream and ,without going into all of the details of the dream, this is what happened....

I was walking down a very beautiful path with flowering trees all down. I shouted "Dream character come here" and thought to myself, this character is going to help me with my portuguese problem... and the character that showed up was my brother, who happenes to have had the same problem with not knowing portuguese til he moved there for 9 months and picked i tup quickly. I said "I need you to help me access the portuguese in my head" And then he started to get into some explanation that seemed very complex and it didnt take me long to not know what he was saying and his face just stopped, he looked at me very confused and said "I dont know"....It was like he was just trying to sound complex but really made no sense at all. So I said F@#* it and went on with my dream.

If Im going to attempt this again, I need to try something better. I need to formulate a plan. I realize that my first mistake was not even thinking about the language and just putting it all on a dream character.

Well. Attemp #1: FAILED...Ill updat on any other succeses or failures.

I think that you could also touch up on leanring hte language in the waking world. If you used to know it, somthing should click in your head. Just a suggestion.

That's the whole point. I am working on it in the waking life and it's driving me mad thats its in my head and I cant bring it to the front of my conciousness. In a dream I consider myself, and whatever I exert my power over, my conciousness. I consider the other parts of my dream my subconcious. So if I can build a bridge between the two, in the dream world, then maybe....I dunno.... Maybe Im just dreamin'(no pun intended )

I would like to blur the line between subconscious and conscious, because my subconscious has different goals then my conscious does, and i'll like to equal them out, so i can do what i want in dreams. I am blocked at times from doing certain things because of this...

Try negotiating with it! Be like, "You control the dream world, but I control the REAL world, and I'm gonna do something drastic if you don't let me have full control of my dreams, you &^%#&*%!!!!" 8) Yeah.

I like the way you think....except, I'd like to work together with my subcoincious. In a peacefull way. So instead Ill tell my subconcious,"We can do this the easy way, or we can do this the hard way....." 8)

maybe i'll let my subconscious have some go time in the real world, and i'll keep my conscousness in the dream world. I doubt thats possible, and if it is, i think they call it multiple personality disorder

To be more serious though, i would like to be able to coincide with it again, it seemed to have thrown me outta LDin for a long time, and now i'm back.

Im sorry to hear that gameover. maybe next time though. Im going to support the idea of working together with you're subconcious. like "I think we should work together in order to reach a common goal" or whatever. Or maybe you could talk to your dream guide and dicuss this matter with it/her/him...

btw if you dont mind, do you think you can keep me updated with your progress? thanks
