      How to control flying?

Okay, so today i woke up for about 10 min then went back to bed, and then I had the most realistic vivid dream i have ever had in my life. It was me and a couple of my friends sitting on the beach.. then all of a sudden I was at my house over seas which i havent been to in 3 years.

The details were so vivid and realistic and I was also lucid. I was in the yard and I wanted to see if i could fly, but the most I could reach was about 3-4 meters of the ground then I just fell straight down, I tried multiple times with run ups but they didnt work and I could feel the pain of falling on to the dirt ><

Could somebody give me some advice on how to control flying and to attain it?

      Hi! Congratulations on the lucid!

I used to have this problem, but I found some 'crutches' if you will, jumping from something high, having a cape of some sort. Things like these affirmed my belief in my dream power, I eventually learned, that (as cheesey as it sounds) all I have to do, is believe in what I'm doing. I know i can fly, so I do. Thats all there is to it.

Also, there is a tutorial for dream control "Here", hopefully that helps! Good luck!

      Hey, thanks :]

I tried crutches, and jumping off high platforms but that just resolted in me falling and feeling the pain lol, I also think im passed the mental barrier of flying but something just wont let me. I wouldnt know where to get a cape though like poofing it out of nowhere

I also tried forming angel like wings but that didnt work either..

      Thanks!

As no-name said, doubt is really one of the biggest factors on why you can't do something within lucid dreams. Take a look at some of the ideas, and if anything strikes you just go ahead and do it! Believe you can, and then all you need is a chosen method.
You merely have to change your point of view slightly, and then that glass will sparkle when it reflects the light.

For it to be real to you in your dream you have to believe in it with absolutely no doubt. I used to doubt and I fell or I just hovered. Now I soar. When I am lucid and I find a window and I am hundreds of feet off the ground there is NO fear because I know I CAN fly and that is what makes it become totally natural and controllable.

I fly almost every night in my dreams, but I'm VERY RARELY ever lucid for them. The world of my dreams is very much as real as life and it has followed certain "rules" for as long as I can remember.
For me, flying is like swimming up from the bottom of a pool. I place my hands above me then bring then down to my sides to grab hold of the air and at the same time I kick up with my feet. Breaking gravity has always been a little difficult, but once I'm up I have perfect control (now that I'm older and more experienced- before, I would get pulled too far out into the sky which scared me).
Maybe thinking of flying in a similar way might help.

However you approach it, I hope you're successful!!

You could try swimming in the air or flying like a bird, this could maybe help you fly better.

As for me. Flying have always been easy for me since the first LD. It got no rules at all. I can just lift off the ground without any problems and fly at what speed I'd like

i have the same problem....doubt. The lucids i experienced,as amazing as they were for me,were nothing more than me walking around and observing things.i do try things. it just doesnt work.

It's not about believing you can fly at all. The reason things in dreams don't work reliably is because we don't have a developed system of experience to draw on to help us fly. You almost never have problems walking!

The way to overcome this is to use a system that is well developed to begin with. While we might not have a lot of actual experience with flight, we can use well developed and stable fictional characters to base our experience on.

Just think of Superman, and take a moment to envision how he flies. Or if Super Saiyen is more your style, just use that. Which ever one you're more familiar with, that you've watched more of, is the one that will work better for you.

Basically what this does is switch universes from one that follows RL rules where flight is impossible, to a universe with a different set of rules where those things are not only possible, but well established possibilities.

I recommend reading the full dream control tutorial that the dream guides have put together, but this is the one specific to flying.

I've been flying for years and I still overshoot things sometimes, just keep practicing and it will get easier.

Pretty much everything everybody has said in this thread. You have to "know" that you can do it in order to actually do it.

And if you manage to take off, I found a nice way to control my velocity and altitude of my flight. With my arms out straight, I noticed that I accelerate faster when I bring my arms backwards, or closer to my sides and that I can increase my altitude by lifting my head back/up, sort of like an airplane throttle. But that's just me, I recommend you make your own controls that work best for you in your flying.

Ya, I noticed that doubt is the main thing ever holding me back from doing certain things in lucid dreams. Like when I try to go through a wall or something like that, thinking "it's impossible" even indirectly and in the very back of my head causes it to not occur.

I learned to fly in my dreams long time ago when I was young and had my first LDs.

If I remember it right it took awhile before it worked properly. But my best advice to you is that you have to believe you can fly in your dream, you can either just tell yourself that you can fly or you can scream it out. Thing here is that if you are honest with yourself that you think you can really fly in your dream, then it will work.

When I first learned to fly I had to run at high speed in the dream and then jump up in the air and concentrate my vision into the air, sometimes I can just fly while I still have the speed from my running. But after awhile I can fly around how much I want.

After I've been flying in my dreams for some years I mastered to levitate aswell, which makes me able to start levitate whenever I want to and then fly away, I believe thats something that takes time to learn. I've had LDs almost every night for round 10 years or something, but I think as soon as you can control your mind and believe that you can fly in your dreams, new doors will be opened for you for new exciting things to try out.

I think that "But that's just me..." should be seen more often on DV. Not every technique will work the same for each person. One of the reasons I compiled that tutorial (with numerous suggestions from the forum), was so that people could get ideas of how to get themselves off of the ground. There's no one way to do anything in a dream, so if you find that something isn't working for you, try something else.

I encourage you and anyone else to do the first thing that pops in your head. Ask yourself, "How can I fly?" and whatever answer comes up, try that. Sometimes the silly and ridiculous works just as well as the standard and straight-forward I know people who dog-paddle through the air, who have taken "flying pills" while lucid, etc. There's no one else to watch you, so if you think you have to shoot yourself out of a cannon to fly, try it. You might like it!

I used to fly effortlessly when I was younger. I loved it! Unfortunately, I didn't know about LDing and I lost interest in dreams for a while, so I sort of lost that natural ability. I've come to the point where I can jump off of something or get a running start and glide for a while, but eventually I do land on the ground. I keep hoping that I will manage to get myself back in the air some time soon. And I will.

Enjoy it, and don't give yourself time to doubt. Don't think about failing. It won't fail. Just keep trying until you find what works.
