I'm too Literal in my dreams!

Hey all, i'm new to the website and this whole lucid dreaming thing, but I want to learn really badly how to control my dreams. There is one slight problem, though. I'm one of the most idiotic people in the world for believing ANYTHING in my dream, and I always believe that im still awake in real life.

No matter what im dreaming about, no matter how absurd, I always think its real. And its very annoying.

Here is what is very disappointing to me: When I am dreaming, I always still think i'm awake in real life.... So that means I can never have a flying dream, or do anything impossible in normal life, because I always think its real.

Please if anybody has advice on how to break that literal habit, I would love to know. I think its a shame that I cant take advantage of doing anything you could imagine, just because Im too literal and think its always real or dangerous in real life.

Yeah, i use to be the same way in my dreams. You have to do rcs, reality checks, and that'll help you attain lucidity. Rcs that you can do, bite your skin, you shouldn't feel pain in your dream, although some people do, pinch your nose and try to breath, if you can breath then you must be dreaming, look at the fingers on your hands, sometimes there are less than five fingers or there could be more than five, there's one about looking at a text or something, and see if the text changes or something. Maybe someone elese can explain to you about the text thing. Try a gravity reality check, and try to fly. I hope this helped. By the way, welcome to dv.

Before you work on control you should work on attaining lucidity properly. You can't just expect to become conscious or aware in a dream and for it happen. You should read some of the FAQs since you will have to be performing reality checks (RCs) or other methods like WBTB + WILD (RCs would be best for your first LD) if you want to learn to LD; although they can happen randomly as well.

You should read through these and some of the other FAQs:

I'd recommend doing DILD as your first experience and performing a few reality checks (definitely include holding your breath one) every few hours (2-3) making sure you consciously ask yourself "Am I dreaming?" while you do this. Reading up as much as you can on LDing and reading up on it just before you go to bed as well will help at first.
This entire reality is SELF REFLECTION. You reflect your essence and project it onto the universe.

"Life represents the movement of knowledge across the spectrum of consciousness."

Hey guys, thanks for the advice on doing reality checks, like biting myself, watch, etc.

But there's 1 problem. I always think im in real life when im dreaming, so I would never have a reason to bite myself. Also, I never wear a watch, so I will never look at what time it is in a dream. If I always think im in real life, am i hopeless to attain lucidity forever?

This is exactly the problem that a normal dreamer has. One thing you really want to start to work on ASAP is reality checking, increasing your awareness of yourself, your actions, your behavior, your environment. Raise this awareness, and you will be more conscious in your dreams. You will begin to suspect when thing are strange, and to become lucid

I've been in the same boat as you. At first I thought RCs were a silly thing to do during the day but as time went on, It eventually carried over into my dreams. Trust me, it's very worth it.

My first reality check came by accident - I was in a pantry and there were boxes of food, I went to read the ingredients and found that they made absolutely no sense- all of sudden I was aware that I was aware and that is how it begun. As for flying , I didn't just take off out of nowhere one night my flying actually began with low gravity jumps and when I could figure out how to bring myself back down in a more graceful fashion then I hovered and worked my way up to flying. Try the MP3's on attaining lucidity thread okay they were really great and helped me when I hit a dry spell. Especially the reality check one.

Oh, i forgot to add one more thing....

When I do actually realize im dreaming, which is rare, I always wake up. Any way to fix that? Its almost like my brain wants to wake me up just when something good is going to happen and I realize im dreaming.

That happens to me quite a bit, too. One thing that helps me sometimes is when i start to lose lucidity and think i'm i real life, i go up to someone and ask "am i dreaming?" in real life the person would probably just look at you crazy, but in a dream the character usually says something like "I don't know, it's your dream" Also, if you can come up with a reason for why you would be able to do something you often can. Example: "wow, i'm on top of a high building. I think i'll jump off. Oh, wait, i'll die if i do that." Now you would think of a reason to jump off) "Oh, i just remembered i was chased up here by a murderer. He was going to push me off." Hopefully, the murderer would then come up and push you. When you fall and then hit the ground, you realize you're dreaming because you're still alive, or you didn't feel any pain. *whew* all done.
