Dreaming about going back to school.

I graduated from my alma mater over 20 years ago, and I had thought of going back for an advanced degree, but my professor and mentor told me that I had learned all I could from them, and I should move on with my career.

I've done that, and I'm now comfortably settled in my career. But, over the last few years, I keep getting dreams about going back. Sometimes, it's just to do a seminar, other times, it's to register for another degree, and, yet other times, it's just to ask about returning to school.

Each time, I seem to be in a different building, which doesn't seem to have a counterpart in the waking world. I did return to my school a few years ago, for a ceremony, and, while there were renovations, there was nothing like the buildings I saw in my dreams. Those buildings were nothing special, but I did know I was back at my old school.

Can anyone tell me why I'm having such dreams?

I get these all the time too. And I did go and do some further study a few years ago. And the dreams continued.

I dunno. Probably a general thirst for learning and a high value placed on academic achievement. In my case I wonder if there's something seductive about the learning environment - kind of safe, nurturing, comfortable in a way that a career doesn't provide. How do you feel when you're in these dreams compared to when you wake from them?

Nothing - I don't feel happy or unhappy. But these dreams do feel lucid or real, as far as I know.

School is such a significant part of our life that we would expect it to be dreamed about. I'm now wondering what else is happening in the dreams. You say you knew it was your old school even though it didn't look like it. You're connecting to the feeling more than the image?

I don't know. So why're we having these dreams?

Who knows? It's very commonplace, though. Maybe we all had character-forming experiences there.

I just had the same dream again. I was sitting in my professor's office, and I said I was going to take the courses. He was also sitting, and he said I would have to go through the readings lists on the wall behind me. I got up, walked to the wall, and tried to read the lists. I couldn't make out the words, but I could see letters forming the words and forming the basic outline of every standard university course.
