So, there was this small toddler coming off an elevator...

I dreamt last night that I was at a hotel ( a really big nice one, too) waiting on an elevator and when the doors opened, this female toddler came strolling out all alone. Of course I looked for any adults who may be accompanying her, but there were none. A bit of time passed and during this time I stayed close to the toddler. The time came for me and my companions to leave (the companions are clear in the dream, just a vibe of some folks I know of being with me). My companions surprisingly told me that I should just leave and forget about the child, which of course, I could not do. Especially when I realized that she had gotten outside and was on the sidewalk alone, in broad daylight just walking around!! Needless to say, I ended up taking the child home with me (to an old house I no longer live in, we moved out of that house the end of June of this year, 2011) and cared for her until news came about her family. In the dream I was falling madly in love with her and hoped that no one would come to claim her. I was even trying to think of a good name for her and thinking of who I could call for used kids' clothes to dress her in. Eventually, however, (as dreams would have it) I was transported to an event that her family members were having and found out that her mother was on drugs "again". And (as dreams would have it) it wasn't clear which one of them was going to care for her all the while I was hoping none of them would take her...and I woke up....(as dreams would have it...).

A dream of finding a young child symbolizes some potential in yourself or new possibility in your life that should be nurtured so it can grow. Companions telling you to abandon it could represent other people or other aspects of your own mind urging you to forget about developing your potential - possibly something you've considered taking up but then put aside for practical reasons. Dreaming of being in a former house could have different interpretations - if it's a house you haven't lived in for many many years it could represent your childhood or an earlier time in your life - but since this is a house you just recently moved from it could simply be that your dreaming mind still uses it as a default and hasn't adapted to your new house yet (I actually have the same thing - I moved into a new house about a year ago and still frequently dream about the old one).

It sounds like the end of the dream is representing your fear that whatever potential the child represents might be taken away from you.

You could be on to something here. After I posted this, I thought about the comment the child's relatives said, that her mother was on drugs again. I used to be a smoker and last night I had a cigarette. Quitting cigarettes, to me, is one way of improving myself and symbolic of, as you say, "some potential in yourself or new possibility in your life" which I consider to be my "baby".

And you're right. Even though I am now living with the man I love, I still often times dream of being back in that house because the move was sooooo recent AND because it was the house that I and my children were raised in.
