What is the significance of this dream?

I had a dream about my ex and its been 2 years since we've spoken.
In the dream, she was on a sort of platform that had a beautiful garden midst the environment while she was trying to grab my hand and hold me up, but i hadn't been able to grab a hold of her hand and I fell into a pit of darkness. The last moment I saw of her was her body over the edge trying to grab ahold of my hand while i was falling down further and further.
Then, I had woken up.
What might my subconscious be trying to tell me?

I and others could make guesses, but they would only be guesses. It's difficult to interpret other people's dreams, because they aren't them. So the best way to really get an accurate interpretation would be to ask yourself. What do you think it means? If you don't know, do you have any guesses? What does it feel like it could have meant? How were you feeling in the dream, and when have you felt similarly before? Ask yourself these types of questions and the answer might become clear.

But if I had to make it guess... it seems like you may be reliving the breakup. The platform might symbolize your belief that she's better than you, or was better than you, in some way, whether it's in progressing in life, in understanding herself, in physical attractiveness, happiness, etc. I don't know. Or maybe that you felt she was good for you somehow. Grabbing her arm and letting go might signify that you tried to make the relationship work but couldn't, perhaps because you feel (or she felt) that she was too good for you in some way. Maybe you're missing her on some level and want her back, or are wondering whether leaving her might have been a mistake. Or perhaps it was nothing like that. Maybe the events were random and had no meaning.

Excellent response from Dianeva....would like to add that only you can bring yourself up, shake off the lose, and rise up and live life to it's fullness. It's up to you to get back to that state of mind again where "life was a garden"...by working on one's own mind, you will attract someone who is your equal.

There's little for me to go on here but if I was in that situation I'd think that if someone was trying to help stop me from falling in a pit, That would be a good sign.

(Since I said that, I should take certain things more seriously.)

I once read a theory that the reason why we humans have falling dreams so often is because the fear of falling has been imprinted into our instincts from the time when our ancestors still lived on trees. Our tree dwelling ancestors slept in fear of falling off. I don't know whether that could be true but it's an interesting alternative explanation for a very common human nightmare: falling.

Looking at this dream one possibility I see is that you felt safe with your ex, you may have felt she tried to keep you secure, but failed, and now you may feel like you are no longer safe, and maybe you need someone else to catch you or maybe you need to learn to catch yourself and not rely on another for your safety. And safety can be emotional safety, or security in whether you make the right choices, or self-confidence, or a safety net that is there for you for time of crisis so you know that you can sleep in peace.

First thing that came into my mind was that you could be still attached to your gf and inside you think 2 year after you broke up, you feel like world is bitter without her. My quess is that you guys broke up because of your ego and deep down you feel that you made a mistake.

What I'm getting is that perhaps you could be missing the idea of her. Note that she is essentially on a pedestal, and unreachable. Are you currently looking for someone who possesses traits similar to those you initially saw in her? I feel like this dream could be telling you to be careful of circumstances which are similar to the ones surrounding that relationship... could be wrong, though.
