New here, would like a childhood dream interpreted

I have never forgotten this dream, I had it when I was about 5 years old. It's always disturbed me in a way and I've wondered what it was about all this time!

My mother was driving our old Mercedes to someone's house on top of a hill. She left me in the car when she parked up, and walked in. The car then started to roll down the hill very fast, and it was a steep hill, and I was terrified. It seemed to be driving itself. Then a jack Russell jumped in, and I was pleased that I wasn't alone any more at least so I stroked it and then pulled it's head off! There was no blood, just lots of pale grey tubes going in different directions to different places in its neck. I was filled with horror again, and I can't remember anything else.

Any ideas as to what could have been meant by this bizarre dream, and why it sticked so strongly?

      Thanks everyone!

      Welcome to DV!

I can't tell a lot about what the dream was about without knowing more about you at that age, but for what it's worth:

I think the car rolling away is about fear of not being in control (kids usually are not) and fear of being alone in a scary situation. Then the dog is a comfort, and then that comfort got torn away from you, and you blamed yourself (although it is very likely that it was not actually your fault - I found that as a kid I often felt the blame for things that I really had not control over, and perhaps you were a bit like me?)

As I said at the beginning, I cannot say what this dream was about without knowing a bit more about you. I know I would have been likely to have a similar dream as a child: in my case my father was very strict and often lost his temper, and I was not in control but blamed myself.

Children in general tend to have much worse nightmares than adults do. It is unfortunately a normal part of childhood. It is especially not fair because children have not learned to cope with nightmares and yet get worse ones, although got to wonder whether that is why nightmares are so bad in childhood: because the child has not yet learned to cope.

      Post Going It Alone

Being 5, maybe it was about you going to school - an unrivalled terror, even ever after...?

Your mother made you go somewhere, that apparently was some sort of goal - being on a hill.
But she left you. In the car. Meaning you must travel or move in life, by yourself, it seems.
And she went where it was stationary or sort of at home.
So you started to go downhill, terrified.

Yes, then you got some sort of comfort or thought of company.
But the thought of that disconnected quickly.
And maybe the pale tubes were the many new ways you had to express yourself, that seemed colourless, in fear? Or the many directions in your head you now had to go, or the many new connections perhaps, you would have to make. Which filled you with horror again about this situation.

Can this milestone be why it was so profound and - stuck in your head, so to speak, or unstuck your head at that time?
