A dream I had when I was a kid that still haunts me. Any thoughts?

A little background that may help. My parents got divorced when I was about 7 or 8. I think I had this dream when I was about 9. I was living at my grandparents house with my mom and grandparents at the time of this dream.

I was alone in the backyard of my grandparents house and I was looking through the fence. I saw my mom playing with my aunt's 2 dogs in the neighbors yard. They all seemed happy. Then this dark thing with no features was behind the fence with them but it was closer to me than them. It was right by the fence on the other side looking at me. I looked at it and was afraid. The only feature I remember was it smiling at me. After the nightmare I woke up afraid and was sweating.

Just wanted to hear any of your thoughts as to who or what the thing might have been and what the dream might have meant if possible.

Oneiroer, first of all it is unfortunately quite normal to have some of the most horrible nightmares of one's life in childhood, and nightmares are more common for kids than for most adults. As to what the dark thing was? Could it be fear of evil? Fear of the unknown? Fear of fear itself? Fear that something will spoil things, which are too happy to last? At that point your life had already been shaken up by divorce, and you knew that a happy family scene may not be counted on to last, that something bad could intervene, that there was no innocent guarantee of uninterrupted good times for all and happy endings all around. The evil in your dream had a smile on its face. Doesn't the evil in life often come with a facade of a smile? I think at nine maybe you already knew that. That a smile could not be trusted to be a sign of friendliness.

You may say I'm a dreamer.
