I think the vast majority are "just that." Every so often something meaningful arises, but most dreams seem formed around anxieties and wish-fulfillment.
If a dream seems like a big deal to you then it's more meaningful. You can judge how meaningful it is to you by how strong your possible emotional reaction to it is upon awakening.
I agree with dolphin. If the dream seems to be meaningful, or seems to give good advice, go with it.
I believe one can find hidden meanings in everything in life including but not limited to dreams. I have successfully used dream interpretation to interpret elements of waking life as well. And it was not necessarily important things either but sometimes unimportant things that I interpretted and they became more important. :) How accurate the hidden meaning is or how important varies. It helps if the person searching for hidden meanings either is the person whose meanings one is searching for or at least knows something about them, although we are also all interconnected in a way by living on the same planet and being exposed to same cultural meanings potentially etc. Thus even a stranger can find meaning that one may find worthwhile.
I'm sure there are dreams that are less significant than others—we are influenced by so much on a daily basis (TV, movies, games, people talking) and any of that can seep through.
I think if a dream stands out to us, it already means something more, and how we interpret it and especially the dreams that we think about or feel strongly about, have the most meaning.
