The presence of animals in dreams usually points to the issue of the dreamer’s overall attitude towards his or her instinctive reactions, emotions, vague feelings, intuitions, fantasies and similar inborn natural traits, so the very upsetting situation of being homeless for 2 years might have understandably resulted in you not letting in certain feelings of anger and frustration etc., as well as not letting in helpful thoughts and intuitions etc. which maybe could help you.
Since these are inborn parts of you, they should somehow be allowed to exist in their own right even though this can be painful at times.
So it’s as if the inner dog/coyote has been enraged by his being denied his right to exist and he could retaliate by “attacking” you.
Unfortunately, in a practical way this could eventually result in you often feeling too down about things and/or in having outbursts of anger and getting physically ill more often etc.
So as you felt in the dream, maybe you shouldn’t really kill the dog but instead, allow your emotions etc. in more often as well as you can in your hard situation.
That way, things are more likely to get better over time.
