      Sewer drain clog (lucid)

I'm curious about this lucid dream I had. I know with lucidity, dream interpretation isn't often sought because you're in control, but I don't completely agree with that. Plus, I think that some lucid dreams have a lot of meaning all the same.

      So here's the dream:

Running in the field behind my parents house, thinking to myself that I cannot even fathom this new feeling of freedom, now that I'm getting divorced. That I never thought I would ever be released from that relationship. Feelings present: disbelief, awe, total freedom. A single Self. Like the first moment you're set free to roam the world of Skyrim...

Then, I think I might be dreaming, and check my hands, etc. Lucid. I ask the dream to show me the nature of a problem I'm having in real life. There is sewer gas coming into my condo bathroom, and because it's a health hazard, it's at the top of my current worries (I have two very little kids).

The dream silently picks me up, a feeling of something pulling me by my chest. I let go and let it take me, despite some fear. It takes me into my parent's house, and down one of the drains. Down, down, down. At the very bottom, near a sewer grate type thing, is a large orange crayon, in pieces, blocking the drain. I think to myself, I could probably move this with my hands if I want to. Happiness. I walk up some stairs, try to ask the dream another question, and wake up shortly after.

I'm trying to figure out if this dream relates to my actual RL situation, or, (and I suspect this more), something to do with my psychological health/childhood/symbolism, etc. Thoughts on the meaning? Thank you.

Your instinctive reaction that the dream deals with an inner issue is the right one, based partly on the fact that no dream generally shows us something we’re not already aware of in some way.

In this case, you’re quite conscious of the problem with the sewer gas coming into your condo and although this is upsetting, it’s not something you can’t deal with reasonably easily with the knowledge you already have of handling such matters.

Also, the fact that dreams use analogies as part of their language means that they will latch onto anything in the outer world which in some way pictures an inner situation in a succinct way.

So your dream starts with you running joyously in the field behind your parents’ house.

This location suggests that attitudes and issues related to your childhood are involved, at first ones related to natural childhood joys but later to a darker side.

The reason for your joy is that you’re getting divorced from a husband who is called by you in an earlier post “controlling”.

Then you ask the dream to show you the nature of the problem you’re having in real life related to the sewer gas.

In this way of looking at your dream, the “problem you’re having in real life” from the dream’s point of view is apparently related instead to some very deeply buried issue (the shattered orange crayon way down at the bottom of a drain in your parents’ house which is symbolically causing a back-up of foul-smelling water and gas).

It looks like this obstruction can be removed with your hands if you want to, and while you understandably don’t do it at the time, you apparently move on to another unrelated question instead of planning a future return and cleaning out of the sewer grate.

So the idea could be that the issue which the dream is dealing with, if not dealt with in some reasonable way, might unfortunately resurface in some kind of a choice being made which could potentially end up as unhappy as the one decided upon in choosing to marry the man you did.

Anyway, I hope that these ideas can be helpful in some way and the concept that lucid dreams have meaning is included in a book which you might like called “Private Myths: Dreams and Dreaming” by analyst Anthony Stevens.

Please feel free to ask any questions or to make any comments about this particular way of looking at your dream.

Thank you for your thoughts, Athanor.

You know, I am not so sure about dreams being about only the things we're aware of. For instance, and part of the reason I sought the answer out via lucid dream, a few weeks ago the lights burned out in my bathroom. I told my husband about it over the phone, and he thought it was the fixture. That night he had a dream a puff of smoke came out of the light switch. Sure enough, the light switch board was the problem. It had burned a fuse or something. But neither of us knew that before hand!

Not so easily. I won't go into it all, but this is going to take a lot of time, cost a lot of money, and working with a reluctant landlord and HOA. In the meantime it is a health hazard. Odd thing is, months before I realized what the smell was, I had a dream with a dream-message from my landlord about a problem with one of the pipes.

But I am working on it. And truth be told (and the Dream surely knows this), a dream telling me about the problem doesn't solve it - no plumber is going to go off of my "random" knowledge!

You know there's this amazing thing that happens as you start taking control of your own life. You stop wanting to be around people who are controlling. Not in an angry way, just in a ... no thanks, way.

Thank you again for the thoughts. Take care!

Oh, one more thing. I had a mini follow-up dream about this dream a day or two ago. Was thinking about it while laying for a short nap, and I imagined myself clearing away the crayon. After I did it, I dreamed that a car rose out of the sewer waters, ready for me to drive.
