      People in my Bedroom

Hi, I'm new here, and I would love some help interpreting a recurring dream. I am 21 years old. I recently moved to a residence and I have a roommate.

Generally, the dream involves some kind of anxiety in which I imagine other persons (always known to me, usually friends, or people I have been with, or with whom I wish to have a good relationship) entering, sitting in, or sleeping in my bedroom with me. In the dream I seem to be half-asleep but I want to be awake for them so I get really nervous and just try to prove I'm not asleep by clapping my hands against my body doing rythms or other weird stuff (that I sometimes do in real life while I'm sleeping having these dreams).

In the end I almost always wake up just a while after this, because the sensation of having someone else in the room is really intense, more than anything I've ever dreamt about before.

      Thanks!!

You may feel pressured about people not letting you have privacy or similar in your life. We'd almost always associate our bedrooms with our own space and privacy, and seeing how they walk in while you're sleeping shows they don't really care about it. And because of this, you feel forced to be awake or give them attention.

      As simple as that!

Thanks a lot for your reply!!

It actually makes sense, but the people that appear in my room, I like hanging out with them, and I wouldn't say I'd mind if they were in my room

There are some people here I really can't stand, haha, wouldn't it make more sense for them to appear in my dream then?

Oh, I missed that part then.

I guess my interpretation still sort of applies. I mean, you're half-asleep so I'm assuming you want to go to sleep in the dream, right? If you don't mind them hanging out in the room, then I guess it's a reflection that you don't mind their company. But you'd still want to be left alone because you want to sleep, right? That's what I was thinking.

A huge majority of sleep paralysis cases involve the feeling on someone entering the room or sitting on the bed. I even had one instance where I dreamed my pet cat from my childhood jumped on the bed and I could feel tiny pressure of footsteps on the bed, and I either could not move or did not want to move for fear of scaring my long dead cat away. I don't know what it is, or what it means, but its harmless. So don't worry about it, don't freak out about it, you may feel like you are not in control but in all actuality..you are in complete control.

Although in order to provide a more accurate interpretation it would usually be best to have some additional general background information about you, it’s at least safe to say that because this dream is a recurring one, it’s important to uncover the message contained in it.

Since dreams speak via analogies and metaphors, they can be difficult to understand.

In this case, focusing on what it is you’re “half asleep” about (that is, mostly unconscious of) probably holds the key to the dream’s meaning.

Your attitude and feelings towards the unthreatening people in the dream is also an important clue.

For example, two strands appear: one is that you want to be friendly with them and the second one is that anxiety is somehow intertwined with this wish.

So the images of the people in the dream probably don’t represent the actual people per se but instead, the conflicting emotions caused by interacting with others at college.

Perhaps you’re mostly a quiet person for whom the often overcharged atmosphere of college might be causing some unconscious worries and upsets but you’re only partly aware of these.

Going to college is a life experience from which a person can learn how to balance out conflicting demands in a pressure situation.

Some kids react to the pressure by relying too much on alcohol and other drugs to kind of anaesthetize themselves.

A certain number of others may become workaholics to block out any need to socialize with others.

In your case, there might a danger that you could possibly become too socially involved with others because at heart, you like people, but this maybe could put undue pressure on your studies.

So the idea could be that while college is a great place to make life-long friends, there might be a need for you to recognize that at some level, it perhaps would be best for you personally to concentrate on a small handful of friends instead of trying to overextend yourself in this area of college life.

If you mull over this interpretation and it seems to click in some way, the dream should stop recurring or at least happen much less often.

Anyway as mentioned, without knowing anything much about you, this way of looking at your dream might not fit your personal circumstances very well, but I hope these ideas can be helpful in some way.

Please feel free to ask any questions or to make any comments about this particular way of looking at your recurring dream.
