I have kind of a unique thought (well maybe not terribly unique, but it's new to me anyway) on meaning in dreams. I think of it kind of like the "ink blot test" or finding stuff in clouds while looking at the sky. It's not so much that there is anything there per se(though I'm not denying the fact that there could be either), rather that it causes you to analyze yourself which can lead to self discovery. Not so much because of the content of the dream but because of the way you choose to look at it. For instance:
Assume you are laying on your back in a grassy field. The weather is warm and pleasant. There is a slight breeze and you are in an overall generally good mood and you just got the promotion you've been busting your ass to get. You look up at the sky and begin to pick shapes out of the clouds. Since you are in a good mood and the overall setting is pleasant, I imagine you would pick out happy, pleasant things.
Now imagine the same scenario only this time it's cold outside. The grass is mostly dead, the wind is harsh and you just lost your job. You feel really crappy. I would imagine in this case the images you picked out would be much less pleasant.
Now those examples are basically "seeing what you feel". But if you look deeper you might learn something about your current state of mind. My point is if you choose to analyze yourself, you might come up with some really profound, relevant insight. The same I think, could be true of dreams.
Does anybody have any thoughts on this? Am I making sense?

Self-discovery seems to be the main point when one works on dreaming interpretation. Then after having discovered some hidden truths in your mind/consciousness you can either ignore them or start to work with them.
It's all boils down to answering to the most basic questions like "Who I am or what am I really looking for?"
