      Church Plays

Recently, I've been having endless numbers of dreams where I'm on stage in my old church, watching a play at my old church or otherwise involved. Usually, in these dreams, something goes wrong. For instance, the play might be very boring, there might not be anyone but me in the audience, someone might trash it, Characters may break with the script, I might have lines or a job to do but not know exactly what, etc.

Quite often I want to get out, or find it awkward being there. Sometimes, though, I don't.

These dreams often end on a positive note, sometimes I enjoy the show. Sometimes I get away from the church and walk home. Sometimes I lend a hand fixing the problem or find a way to solve whats going wrong.

Really, there's a lot of variety. But there's always a stage and I'm usually only tangenitally and unwillingly involved with procedings.

I haven't been in that church in five years. And the last time I left it I ended up losing the last real shred of faith I had in God an hour later.

The youth group and the people there were kind of fun. But towards the end of my time there my parents stopped going and joined the house church movement and I felt that everyone was making an effort to engage me in useless small talk to try and keep me coming back.

I did a few plays and presentations there with the youth group and sunday school. But most of my drama experience has been in university.

Does anyone have an idea why I might be dreaming about this obscure part of my life now?

Well often dreams link to our conceptual thoughts (ideas such as "I really don't like doing that because she constantly does not recognize my abilities") or feelings (such as "I feel really tired right now").

Dreams can link to precise thoughts and deconstructing them can show exactly how we are thinking on a particular issue. For instance, a dream about this church may link to certain types of thoughts. It may link to situations where you are doing someething that you really have no faith in. Often we get dragged into things because people we know are doing them. Maybe you are balancing how much you dislike such a situation against the need to help and please others. Does that sound familiar right now? Its easy to get dreams wrong so if that does not sound as if it makes sense other ideas could be explored.

Nightmares have the ability to really frighten us. Thats because they contain weird and supernatural dream symbols such as demons and monsters. The forces that we fight against seem all too powerful. But really many nightmares are sourced right in the here and now. They symbolize our day to day traumas and difficulties. Many simply reflect on the previous day. Perhaps you simply took one risk too many? Perhaps you acted in a nasty and malicious way and your dream is alerting you to this.
Many nightmares will not mention anything that can remotely link to real life in any meaningful way. But the link to reality is there. Really the best way to see nightmares is simply ask your self what real life situations are drifting into some nightmare scenario? What relationship is becoming a real problem? If you look up nightmare in the dictionary its definition is probably more down to earth than dreams would have us believe. A nightmare is really just a very big problem. In real life we get problems all the time and sometimes they get out of hand.

Hm. That makes a hell of a lot of sense to me. Maybe my brain is trying to draw a parallel between how I felt then (like I was putting on an act, unsure of myself) and how I feel now.

The fact that this idea was not obvious to me and did not occur naturally might show the importance of the feeling involved here. Thanks for an interesting idea there.
