series of dreams that keep repeating

For the past year now I have been having a series of dreams that keep repeating themselves. The main plot and message never changes. The only thing that does change is settings. But in the end it’s all the same, and it’s quite upsetting to me. This has never happened to me before. That is why I am so curious. I am also worried because I think the message my dreams are telling me is a warning.

I guess I should explain myself more first, you see, my dreams are all about this friends of mine, he’s actually my best friend, I care about him a lot. But he hides most of his personal life from me, there’s a lot I can’t figure out about him. Sometimes I even worry about him. The order that my dreams follow, I never noticed it before, but it’s starting to become very clear to me now. This is the sequence in which my “series dreams” play out.

First, I will be having a regular dream, any dream at all really, happy, sad, or even boring. As the dream starts to reach it’s ending I’ll suddenly say “Where is my friend!” And whatever I was doing in that dream, I’ll stop and look for him…but no matter how hard I try I can’t find him. I sometimes wake up feeling exasperated and weak from searching. Most of the time I have scary dreams, like someone is after me, and I run off in search of him for help, but still I never find him. This part of the series goes on for about a month. Yea I know how crazy, a month of searching sure seems exhausting, and yet I never quite in my dreams it‘s this never ending determination.
Then the next part: After about a month of nothing but search dreams, I finally have a dream where I find my friend. And every time I find him, something is causing him pain, or hurting him. And I run to him and try to help him, I’ve noticed I always suggest for him to run away from whatever is troubling him. I try so much to reason with him, but every time he refuses to listen and runs away from me. Then the story repeats and I go on another month long search to find him. It’s Mentally exhausting! Can anybody help me? I would so very much appreciate it! If there is anything else I may need to explain about myself to help interpret this, I’d be fine with filling in more details. I just want the mental agony to stop!

The part where you first "find" your friend suggests that you have been looking for something that you are close to finding ( or have found ) and has been taken away from you. You then go to find it again. The fact that somebody is chasing you could mean that you are being hindered in your search, and possibly threatened. You finally find the thing you are searching for and you realize it is too late. The next part is kind of confusing. Maybe you are trying to come to terms with what you have found, or maybe you have found what you are looking for, but they/it is not able or willing to do what you thought they/it would do. Is your friend of the opposite gender? that may suggest something. Also, though it is only a line compared to the above interpretation, don't overlook this: it could always be just another recurring nightmare. My advice is to try as hard as you can to become lucid ( or, alternately, the next time you become lucid... ) and find your friend. There are a couple of ways you could theoretically end having these dreams. You could kill your friend, putting him out of his misery. You could kill the attacker, but that wouldn't guarantee making it to your friend on time. You could also find some way to heal your friend/ get him help. You would have to continue on this by following through, making sure he gets out of the hospital, and returning home. Then you would have to make sure you went back to the way you were. It will be very difficult once you do get into the dream, but if you succeed, it could easily work to get rid of the dream. Often times, dreams will end if you have some kind of "closure". The human mind always wants to know what happens afterwards. By satisfying that need, you could possibly get rid of the dream. but about your suggestion...I can't really become lucid, it's almost impossible for me. But thanks for your help.

You are trying to process him being emotionally unavailable to you.

Just let the dreams continue but tell you mind you need rest at night too, as I guess you want the friendship to continue.

If you can't become lucid by seeing the scenario, create it the next time you become lucid and follow one of my above suggestions. That should help get rid of it.
