[First dream post] The un-helpfull Woolworths

This is taken directly from the notepad I wrote upon waking, so forgive me if it's not 100% coherent (ran a quick spellcheck over it.)

I remember the beginning this time. there was a gate in the middle of the street - the entrance to a car park it looked like, it was closed up with that link-like mesh. I could see at the lock someone had left the keys in. after a little hesitation I took the keys and unlocked the gate and went inside
the car-park seemed a normal workers car park. but I wanted to see what was upstairs. after walking a little further in I saw there was a security booth with a bored looking female guard inside. I didn't really have any cover so I figured the jig was up. I was lucky though - just in front of me I saw an elevator and some stairs and out of the elevator came a man in a suit, carrying a briefcase. the guard apparently knew him as she called over to him and they started chatting.
ceasing the moment I crouched and hurried to the stairs. everything was very normal looking. vaguely off-white walls with nasty phosphorous neon lighting.
at the second landing I arrived at the first floor, announced by a set of security barriers that looked like the kind they had in stores as anti shoplifting devices, with an added bar in the middle to let people know it was closed. this was unusual because beyond them was a rather large office-scape with people in suits walking busily back and fourth with papers, talking on phones, working in cubicles.... basically the very archetype of a busy office. to the left I saw the stairs continued upwards, I had to walk through one set of barriers and the other way through another to continue upwards (as I didn't really want to check out the office). I was surprised that no one there noticed me.
as I reached the second floor there was another set of barriers, blockaded this time by shopping trolleys. this floor was quite dimly light, as if the lights had gone out and the only light was coming from outside from a high window. I wanted to keep going upwards, but I decided to check out this floor first. I struggled under the blockade and found myself in the most unusual place....

without any people, you might have mistaken it for a supermarket. it had isles of products like canned goods, soft drink, cheap clothes, toys and all the rest of it. the ceilings were very high and, though it wasn't lit there was enough light to see by. giving the place a second glance would have revealed there was something slightly wrong, as though a riot had recently hit it. the shelves were wonky and mis-aligned. many of the clothes were hung on the walls in strange positions and cans of food littered the floor.
the most remarkable thing though was the people there. it was definitely a crowd! people bustled down the busy isles. not shoppers par-se. some of them were dancing and somewhere in the distance I could hear a brass band moving about. some people I could see were wearing bunny costumes. many were dressed eccentrically. a few were on stilts or bicycles.
it seemed part circus, part shopping riot, part carnival. I slipped in amongst the crowds unnoticed. as I walked though the strange landscape I took my Dictaphone out of my pocket and started describing what I saw. at one side of the place I could see there were check-out isles where people would que with the things they wanted to buy. however nearly every single till was having an argument with the customer. a few were even breaking out into fights. after a few minutes I stopped a passer-by and asked "what IS this place?" the black man, who was maybe in his 40s said to me "why, this is the Unhelpful Woolworths', of course!"
((For those not in Britan, Woolworths is/was a large chain general store in the UK that famously went bust in the recent recession. The fact it was that particular store didn't seem to matter too much; just that it was a well-known chain.))

I marvelled at the sheer spectacle. it was a celebration of consumer dissatisfaction. nothing was in it's logical place. the employees were not just indifferent to your problems, but actively misleading. and yet there was an odd joyfulness about the whole thing. we were all participants in a secret post-modern ritual. a twisted reflection of retail therapy.
I still wanted to see what was on the next floor. back at the barriers the trolleys had been removed as it was apparently time for people to leave. many of the un-shoppers started making their way out. a few, however, like me, wanted made our way to the stairs leading upwards. at the top of the stairs were two bouncers or security guards. again, I seemed to get by them un-noticed, clinging to the walls. I had heard that up above was the 'unhelpful currys', an electronic counterpart to the show we had just attended. at the top floor (which had no security barriers this time) however the space was significantly smaller. there were no isles or anything at all for that matter. just a large office-carpeted room with the lights not working. at the far end of the room was the elevator. maybe ten people gathered round and sat down expectantly, as if they had won some kind of test and now expected a prize. I think I had disappeared from the room at this point, dreaming in a more general sense around the room. someone had asked what was the time was. someone replied it was 4:05 am. some people expressed their surprise at the lateness of the hour. suddenly the two security guards re-appeared at the stairs, looking angry. realising they were in the wrong place, many tried to push past them to escape. only two (one per guard) were caught. they had their hands bound behind them with plastic cuffs. struggling, they pulled the unlucky captives to the elevator. when the doors re-opened the four were at the entrance to the unhelpful Woolworths' again, this time emptied of people. the guards threw the men forward towards the ground so that they landed in a heap and watched coldly. one of them checked his watch and then the captive on the right screamed. something flashed blue-white and suddenly he had dissolved into various canned goods.
the second man looked back in horror and struggled to get up, back to the lift but it was too late. some invisible force threw him against a wall and in a flash he had become a cheap blue and white polka dot dress, ready for the next odd celebration.

I awoke quite gently from this dream. it was a good dream, with feelings of excitement and discovery and only took a slightly macabre twist at the end.

I'm not sure if it means anything, but I can't get it out of my head! Any thoughts?
