I just use myself. :P
I try to look for elements such as past events, feelings etc.,to figure out what could have led up to a certain dream I've had.
I tend to agree with using yourself, as you are the lone authority of the conveyed meaning from your unconscious. Take time to revolve the symbols & imagery in your mind that come from dreaming - really try pursuing it and you will reveal the hidden meanings yourself.
There are plenty of dream dictionaries online, which are a good way to get started. Don't just take the translation as written, though. Ask yourself: Does that make sense to me when I bring the dream to mind? And always try and get to the emotional component of the dream, even if you don't know what it's telling you. After a while you will likely start to see patterns and/or themes emerging in your dreams.
In my opinion the most effective way is to ask someone to listen to you, and feed back to you what they're feeling and what comes to mind when they hear your dream. There will be plenty of unconscious material coming through which alone you might miss but might be obvious to another. Discussing dreams of forums like this is another, similar, approach.
burned up, do you have any examples of online dictionaries of that sort?
