We were riding in a long camper-bus along a bumpy, dusty road with low lying shrubs on one side and dark trees on the other.. The outside of the bus was a dirty white colour, it looked very old and ragged. There were about 25 of us riding in total and we all had our own bunk-beds in the bus. Out the tinted windows we could see it was getting dark. Most people had rifles slung behind their seats. We had been travelling for a while, and there was some quiet jazzy music coming out the radio. Most of the other people were asleep. Some strange noises were coming from outside, cracking noises and the occasional dog-like yelp. Something started scraping against the side of the bus, and some of the people woke up and tried to see what it was. The scraping got a little louder, and then stopped, only to start again a few minutes later. Several people were now staring out the windows. It was very hard to see in the twilight, it had got considerably darker in the last few minutes. At one point I thought I could see a large shape running alongside the bus, but it was gone the next time I looked. I didn’t know if I had really seen something or if it was just my imagination. Suddenly the scraping came back much louder than before. Everyone looked over to that side and most of us got a quick glimpse of a brown tail flicking away. Now nearly everyone was awake and murmuring about the sounds.
“I’m going down to the front of the bus” I announced to everyone.
I shuffled down the bus, trying to avoid kicking any cases over. It was quite hard to stay upright on the bumpy road. I reached the front, there was a door which separated the rest of the bus from the driver in his front cabin. I opened the door and stepped inside to speak to the driver:
“Did you catch an eye of whatever that was?” I asked him.
“Hmmn?” the driver drawled, with a cigar in his mouth.
“Well, some of the guys are getting real nervous back there. Just thought I’d let you know.” I replied.
“Nervous eh? Well... This ain’t our country anyhow...” said the driver, very slowly.
I was confused; “Not our country? What do you mean? Whose country is it?” I asked hastily.
The driver sighed and took his cigar out to say one word: “Zerg.”
The second he said the word ‘Zerg’ the bus made a huge lurch to the right. A high pitched whistling sound came from the sky, and something brown crashed from the sky and impacted with the side of the bus, near the back. The force of the impact blew the door open and I could see down the whole length of the bus. All the cases and objects had been blown to the right. Everyone else strapped themselves in. I tried to get back down the bus, I got about 2 metres before another whistling impact knocked the bus the other way. I fell to the floor and rolled over onto my side. Many more whistling impacts hit the ground and the bus, the next minute went in a blur. Large gaping holes were gashed open on the sides of the bus. There was so much chaos that I decided I really needed to get off the bus. Luckily for me, another impact had gashed a hole in the side nearest to me, I crawled towards the hole and rolled out the bus, my fall cushioned by some mud.
I stood up and the sight took my breath away, all around me explosions were happening. There were lots of Zerg in the sky and on the ground. I saw several human vehicles, other buses and tanks, which were being bombarded. A group of people ran by me and shouted:
“We are all going to die on this goddamn plain!”
This made me angry, I was determined I would not die to the Zerg. I ran over to a white truck and got inside. I floored the accelerator and sped off across the plain. The ground was very bumpy, but the ride was entirely smooth. I had no idea why it was so smooth, may be the truck had amazing suspension or something. It didn’t really matter to me then. I crested a hill and saw strange giant lobsters were coming towards me. I climbed out the cab of the truck, and looked up, a silver spacecraft was hovering above me. I blinked and I had appeared inside. I saw two men in army gear, one male pilot with a white helmet and blue overalls, and one woman with a strange black suit who talked to me:
“What is it like out there?” I asked her. It was a completely illogical question as I had been outside only a few seconds ago.
“They are pushing hard, but we have a way to finish this.” She answered. “Look”
I walked with her to a window in the side of the ship. All the Zerg were a long way down on the plain below. Suddenly blue domes of light rose out of the ground around the centre of the plain. The domes were huge and glowed with a light hue.
“What on Earth is that?” I asked the woman.
“We are trapping them with EMPs. We must keep them here.” She answered.
“Why must you keep them here?” I asked.
“You’ll see” She said with a smile.
I watched through the window as the swarm of Zerg circled their blue prison. I saw a black shape dropping out the sky, it hit the centre of the plain, dead in the centre of the ring of blue orbs and the Zerg swarm.
‘They were nuking them! They kept them on the plain so that the nuke would wipe them out!’ I thought to myself.
The ship we were in flew back over the way the bus had came. I kept on going, to places I did not remember passing. It eventually stopped at a towering city. It was absolutely beautiful, there were tower blocks so high they went into the clouds. Lots of metal walkways branched between the buildings. The whole city had an organic feel to it, the architecture of the metal structures was pretty incredible, with twisting beams and lots of hemispheres. The ship landed on one of the larger walkways. I talked to the woman again:
“Why are we here?” I asked
“Our work is not done.” She said
“What’s here? Zerg?” I questioned her further
“You’ll see.” She answered with an enigmatic smile, exactly the same as she had used earlier. It was quite infuriating.
We walked out of the ship and strolled along the walkways. The two army men and the pilot were with us. I tried to ask the army men questions but the woman kept answering for them:
“So who are you guys?” I tried to ask the left man
“We are elite” said the woman instead.
“What do you do?” I tried to ask the right man
“We do this.” said the woman again.
No matter how hard I tired I could not get a word out of the two army men, the woman seemed to be the only one of the crew that talked, apart from the pilot who made occasional radio calls to air traffic control (I didn’t know why).
We had gotten quite far, and we had reached the foot of another huge tower block. It became obvious at once that there were Zerg here too. Many of the windows were smoking and the sides of the building were charred. We managed to see a couple of flying Zerg go round a corner. The woman spoke to the two army men:
“The others will be here soon.” She said to them.
A loud whooshing sound came from the sky. I looked up and saw a small one-man ship flying towards the tower. The pilot yelled “Here we go!” so loud we heard it from the ground. He hurtled towards the tower and started firing at something.
“Well that’s them occupied” the woman said
“So what do we do? Are there Zerg here? You aren’t going nuke this place are you?” I pestered the lady.
“Look that way.” She pointed up a ramp.
I looked where she was pointing and saw some huge moving plants. Some of them were flowers and others looked like venus-flytraps. I stared at them for a while and then woke up.
