      Retracing a train of thought

I think that oftentimes when my mind wanders or I'm dreaming (to me they seem similar in that your mind just freely associates ideas), I find that when I catch myself (or wake up from a dream), it is hard to retrace the steps/associations backward (and forward). For example, if the last thought I remember thinking about was how I need to go the library, I'll try to retrace the thoughts that led me there. EX: I see a rock which makes me think of skipping rocks on water which makes me think of traveling which makes me think of being on a plane which makes me think about how the last time I was on a plane, I wanted to sit to the left of the plane, which makes me think of the beyonce song "to the left", then to free music, then to the library, then to the books I need to pick up.

I think that since dream memory and normal memory are similar (neurologically), that improving your ability to retrace trains of associate thought in waking life will help you recall more of you dreams.

Has anyone ever thought about this or have any tips for retracing trains of thought?

I don't even associate things like that in real life!

I was always a dreamer, in childhood especially. People thought I was a little strange.-Charley pride

I've always had incredibly good recall. Throughout my whole life. (As long as I have a good sleep schedule). When I wrote a dream journal it was even better, I'd literally remember everything afaict lol
And yeah I am very good at being able to trace a train of thought. So you might be on to something.

I kind of do it like you. But I don't go through the whole process.

If I see a book I think of a library. I can't even imagin getting up and seeing a rock and being like "oh shit I have a library book due."

Well, it doesn't happen right away. I'll go for a walk. See a rock. It will set of the chain of associations. Maybe 50 feet later I'll remember I need to get my library book.

But yeah, generally if I tried to retrace the train of thought it would take me a long time if I could even do it at all. I'm just sitting there at the mercy of my subconscious mind to recall the information.

I wrote about this in my dream journal a few days ago, thinking somewhat the same. I used the term, "pivoting," for when the scene would shift around an object or person from one surrounding and theme to another. In essence, I have multiple dream narratives that are connected via this little trick. I try to decipher their mechanism while awake, as a way to be more aware of it during the dream. Kind of like guide posts, that make it easier to recall the entire string of dream later in the morning.

In a similar sense, you could think of a good deal of casual conversation in regular daily life the same way. Often it's tangental, with one small comment going off on a side issue, then maybe back, or maybe off to something completely different than when the conversation first started .

Didn't think abut that aspect. Makes perfect sense and I get that too in dreams.

      Genius.
