As for being general or specific with your dream sign classification, I would suggest making it more of a general idea that you want to get across (being powerful) because there's not many times when your dreams play out the exact same way or with you as the exact same role.
For things that you can't check during the day (like being an emperor) maybe just try doing reality checks when something seems abnormal. Since you haven't gotten to the point where you can recognize that somethings out of place in the dream you have to tell your mind to focus on those things while you're awake. Also for now you may want to pick dream signs that you can relate to during the day, so that when you see something that shows up commonly in your dream you will remember to RC and then you'll remember to do that during your dream too.
One way to connect specific things may be to think about what you saw in your dream, and imagine yourself becoming lucid from it. Visualize (daydream) as best you can the situation you were in, and replay it where instead of just ignoring it, you become lucid, do RCs that fail, and begin doing whatever it is that you want to do. Also while going through the daydream you could remind yourself that you will RC when any situation seems dream-like.
I don't really think about using dream signs as a way to become lucid unless something shows up VERY often.
Edit: I also wanted to give an example of a possible dream sign (this is one of mine). Since I smoke weed I've noticed that it tends to show up pretty commonly in my dreams, so whenever I see anything related to weed (pipes, lighters, joints, etc) during the day, I ask myself if I'm dreaming. I've quit recently to help with my recall, so I don't do checks that often and I haven't become lucid from seeing weed in my dreams, so I need to start looking for other common themes that I can start using.
