      Spotty Recall

So I am not new to the site but I haven't been on in forever but figured I would come on to talk about something that's been bugging me the past few months. I'm having this weird problem with my dream recall. I will go a week or two not remembering anything at all when I wake up, and then for one or two nights I can remember at least one but sometimes up to 3 detailed and vivid (sometimes lucid) dreams per night. Then its back to a complete absence of recall. I haven't changed anything up in my routine, so I can't figure out what it is that's going wrong. Any ideas on the cause or how to fix it? Thanks!

I have some of that too, like I will have wonderful dream recall for a while and then a week of none, and then again much better recall. I think that's normal to some extent. The main goal for improving dream recall is to increase the number of nights when recall is good, and reduce the number of nights with bad recall or none, but with the understanding that bad recall nights may happen to anyone - there are few people who can sustain great recall consistently all the the time, but it is certainly possible to improve one's overall recall most nights. The following DV tutorial gives a few ideas for how to improve dream recall: Dream Recall Tutorial - Lucid Dreaming - Dream Views. Also joining dream competitions on DV helps if you are a competitive person - I had a week of no dream recall, but as soon as the competition that I am in now started my recall improved drastically (now if only I could get lucid again!).

Like JoannaB says, sometimes recall can fluctuate, but it can definitely be improved. Keep practicing, writing/typing DJ, you can also try some recall related mantras and waking up right after dream, using mantra "I wake up after each dream and remember it" or similar. Also you can try recalling your day before going to sleep, general memory practice like that can help improving recall as well.
