FISHING FOR DREAMS - A Dream Recall Technique?

      FISHING FOR DREAMS

I'm pretty new to lucid dreaming, so if this is something you've all known since the beginning of time, please humour me.

This morning I woke up and had absolutely no memory of any dreams, even though I had slept 7 hours. I had a thought... what if the dreams are still somewhere, but I just don't have enough attention where they are to remember them?

I decided to experiment with the spinny thing. My thought was, if it can intensify a partially developed dream, maybe it can intensify one that has all but faded away.

I put my attention 15 minutes back in time and did the spinny thing. I immediately got the buzzing sensation I get when I contact a dream, so I did the spinny thing again. The buzzing increased and I remembered the dream.

I continued my experiment by putting my attention further back in time and doing the spinny thing. After a while, I realized it was like fishing for dreams. If I felt the buzz there was a dream at that time, and with a little work, I could follow the buzz and zero in on the dream.

At 4 hours back I encountered a fierce buzzing and recovered an incredibly vivid dream. Seems the more intense the buzz, the more vivid the dream.

In the end, I recovered 4 dreams.

I'm really curious to find out if it will work again for me, and of course it will be interesting to see if it works for other people.

Could you explain this "spinny thing" you are talking about?

If you lay still after you wake up, you can start thinking about your dreams of that night. Even if you don't remember any, just look for any clue or feeling, that could help you remember the dream.

Keeping a dream journal is another way to help you get better recall.

Mantras, like "I remember my dreams" seems to also help. For more hints, check out this subforum of Dream signs and recall.

That may have been what was happening.

Yep, been keeping a dream journal for ten days now. Still getting in the habit of not moving and recalling dreams before they fade. Sometimes it seems there's nothing there to fade no matter how still I stay, or how soon I look. That's what led to my little experiment.

Mantras, like "I remember my dreams" seems to also help. For more hints, check out this subforum of Dream signs and recall.
I will check out the dream signs and recall subforum. Thanks!

I replied to above, but must have done something wrong, because I don't see it now and will answer again.

I wasn't sure what to call it. By "spinny thing", I meant spinning around when in a dream to make it more vivid... if I understand that concept correctly. In my experiment, when I directed my attention to the past, I assumed I was either in a faded dream... or not. Then when I did go through with the intention of spinning around in it, either I would get a buzz and the dream would come to view... or nothing would happen.

After reading more today, I'm wondering if the whole experiment might have taken place during a false awakening. Will try it again tomorrow morning if I can.

Sounds like a cool technique. It will be interesting to see if you get consistent results with it.

I think it might also be used as a step to wild in addition to recalling dreams.

      Wow! Thanks for that, nyxCC!

This morning I woke up around 6am ,and as is often the case, I forgot to remember dreams before getting up to go to the loo. Went back to bed and used this technique to recover last dream, which was about fixing a water pump at the top of a 1000 foot radio tower.

When I had the dream fairly solid, I spun into the dream with no effort and was again on top of the tower... nice view and I knew I was dreaming.

I decided to jump off the tower and float in the sky, which I did. I tried to look at my hands but couldn't until I realized I had no hands to look at because at the moment, I was a floating spot of awareness in space. Made a body, looked at hands, too many fingers, dream became more vivid.

Funny how the looking at the hands thingie works. Even though I knew I was dreaming and had just dreamed up the hands I was looking at, it still increased vividness. Expectations?

Dream lasted about a half an hour.

      It was all too easy.

The question is; will the technique work for others or is it just my expectations and beginner's luck at work here?

And a final Q... Is there a tutorial on this site that one does while in a lucid dream rather than while awake?

Nicely done, Nailler! Congrats on the ld. :bravo:

Spinning is generally recommended as a way to improve dream stability, although it may not be working with the same success rate with every person. For one thing, I am quite sensitive to certain types of movements in dreams and that sometimes contrary to expectations throws me off balance. Yet, I can understand that it is possible for this technique to work well. And yes, expectations also play an important role with both induction techniques and dream control.

This spinning technique seems to facilitate you getting a hold of the dream and boosting dream vividness. Perhaps it is the act of movement itself that makes it easier to get into the dream body and engage fully in the dream. The best way to know if it will work for others is to encourage them to try this technique, as means to increase stability and vividness, as means to easily get into a scene while wilding, and possibly to access previous dreams.

Also, since this is working so well for you, you will probably keep on using it and then your skill will get even better the more times you practice it. That is so exciting!

And a final Q... Is there a tutorial on this site that one does while in a lucid dream rather than while awake?
I suppose you are referring to dream control tutorials? We have a few here:

      Dream Control Tutorial

      Nature of dream control

If you have any particular questions about dream control tasks please do ask (perhaps best in a new thread).

      Good luck with your exploration!
