      RE: Dream Recall Tutorial

Something caught my attention in the dream recall tutorial that I found..

Longer REM cycles also help create more vivid dreams so any chemical that acts as a REM suppressant (such as a sleeping pill) can produce vivid and easier to remember dreams. It is suggested that you use sleeping pills that are melatonin based because they are more natural.
If longer REM cycles are helpful.. Why would you want to suppress REM sleep? And how would that help make them vivid and easy to remember? o.O Maybe I'm simply reading this wrong, but as it stands I find myself more than a little confused.

Some people believe that if they suppress their REM, they will have a REM "rebound" of longer REM.

It's not a belief, it's fact. You can measure it.

Because if you supress rem phases in the first half of the night, you will have much longer rem phases in the second half of the night and therefore more vivid dreams and longer and that means easy way to recall them and even easy way to become lucid, if you know how.

There are many substances that supress REM, for example: Shot of hard liquor just before bed, melatonin, 5-htp, deprived sleep from last night and so on. It's not healthy aproach, but it works.

That makes more sense then, thank you. I was seriously confused at first when I read that bit. ^.^

Any knowledge on if diphenhydramine (benadryl) has the same effect?

In the second stage (during wbtb after first half of the night (4,5 hours)) there are also substances and activities that help you prolong REM phases. For example caffeine, nicotine, sulbutiamine, (galantamine), long wbtb, whatever makes you more awake... The trick is fall back to sleep which can be sometimes difficult for many people. But if you make it, you are going to have epic long vivid dreams and if you are experiences lucid dreamer they will be lucid without any induction technique. (atleast for me)
