Question Are you meant to catalog dream signs from lucid dreams?

I tried to ask this on the Lucid Dreaming subreddit, but for reason I just got downvoted a lot without any answer. So instead I'm asking here because you guys seem to be more helpful than redditors.

In LaBerge's "Exploring the world of lucid dreaming" book, he says that you should go through your recorded dreams in your dream journal, and list all the dream signs you can from your records of the dream. What I'm wondering is, are you meant to do this for dreams where you were lucid as well as non-lucid ones? Or is it intended to be a practice just for non-lucid dreams?

The reason I'm curious is because in a lucid dream there is a lot more easily identifiable dream signs, so much so it feels like I'm writing another recollection of the dream. Besides, isn't the reasoning to practice this based on attempting to have DILD? So if you were already lucid, recording the dream signs from that dream isn't as useful as recording the signs from a non-lucid dream?

So I stopped for now, and I'm here asking this question.

You can do this for both non-lucid or lucid dreams (provided you didn't change the scenery). What are your dream signs?

I'll let someone else answer, just wanted to say sorry that that happened to you at Reddit, it was not helpful at all when someone is reaching out for help. DV will help you out anytime though. =)

I recently picked up a copy of EWOLD and added the dreamsign catalog to my journal. His reasoning in the book is so you can determine which of the 4 categories he's chosen (Inner awareness, action , form, context) is most prevalent for you so you can focus on noticing that one in real life. I have found it helpful so far because I noticed the most common one is context, so hopefully that will positively impact my lucidity rate in the future!

      Hey there,

Are you supposed to catalogue them? I guess that depends on your approach and technique, but it certainly helps to be at least familiar with your dream signs. Personally, I have quite a bunch of them. Some appear more then others, some are more effective then others. Of some, I can guess some underlying meaning. Some just seem to have no meaning at all. I've never seen the point in catalogueing them, but I do make a point of noting them down in my dream journal when they appear.

      Just my 2 cents,

      About the same here!

Some have meaning though. One of mine is not being able to fall asleep - and it usually happens after I do something WILDish but fall asleep (the irony!). So training to RC in these scenarios seems pretty important... I "keep" a short list, and try to RC when encountering these signs in RL. Things that I don't encounter in RL aren't on that list - what's the point if I never get to RC on it, right?

Funnily, my most effective dream signs are the ones that *never* (or almost never) show up in real life. There the ones that always seem to work, because if they appear, I'm sure I'm in a dream

I did the same thing. Quite interesting to see that there is a big difference in the number of items in each category. For me CONTEXT is also the most important one.
I try to be aware as much as possible of where I am, and with whom, and hope that this will help me!

Redrivertears, I usually choose DSs that are very rare in really life, but still occur, because then I look for them. How do you practice recognizing DSs that don't happen in real life?

Hirondelle, yes I agree! Practicing overall awareness is more important, in my opinion. But some dream signs are just obvious targets

Hi Spock, after reading your reply I had a quick look at my list of DC's again. Hardly any of them seem to appear in waking life, except for feeling horny and my husband being angry. He'll be surprised when I start pinching my nose or pushing my finger through my hand at those moments :-D

      Hey,

For me, I've yet to find a way to effectively 'practice' recognizing dreamsigns. They either seem to work, or they don't. I've long been trying to make myself recognize certain dreamsigns, with very limited (read almost non-existant) success. Yet others I recognize instantly, pretty much 100% of the time, from the moment they started appearing. Most dream signs fall somewhere in between. They make me aware that I'm dreaming, but not with enough lucidity to break away from whatever dreamplot I'm currently involved in.

This makes a lot of sense to me as well. It seems that (assuming you don't alter the dream) the dream content will still be drawn from the same aspects of the mind (subconscious & unconscious material).
