Relating Dream Signs and Reality Checks

I have very good recall and several years of experience and journals to enable me to confidently recognize recurring dream signs and the general categories of dream signs that dominate my dreams. I have also made one of those charts of different types as recommended in one of the tutorials. So I figure I have done all the things I should for this part of working towards lucid dreaming.

Now what do I do with these dream signs? From the tutorials, I get the sense that constant reality checks while awake will result in reality checks while dreaming. But how do the dream signs play into that? Does just developing awarness of them lead to you to just start developing a sense that something's out of place in the dream, prompting a reality check? What else can I do to take advantage of my dream numerous dream signs, at least one of which seem to pop up in many of my dreams?

It may depend on your specific dreamsigns. For some people their dreamsigns occur only in dreams (e.g. teeth falling out, car brakes that don't work) With this type of dreamsign MILD techniques are helpful. You are building the expectation that when you see the dreamsign you will become lucid.

Other dreamsigns may be things that happen regularly in your dreams, and also in waking life. So you want to get in the practice of doing a reality check any time you see that thing. For example, I had some dreams about helicopters, so whenever I see a helicopter i do a reality check. If I'm dreaming and I do the reality check which fails, it will tell me I'm dreaming.

Its easier if your dreamsign is unique to the dreaming world. But not everyone has these.

“If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange these apples then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas.” (or better yet: three...)
