      dream recall

so the past week ive been trying to have a lucid dream, but more so ive been trying to increase my dream recall.

so my problem is that when i awake i will kind of remember my dream, like today when i woke up all i remembered was something about a submarine or battleship or possibly both and i just remember a kid named lance. is that bad dream recall? also yesterday i woke up and had no idea about my dream, but about half an hour later on the way to school i was trying my hardest to remember my dream and i was listening to music and as i listened to the drums, it reminded my of my old band teacher and BAM! i knew that my band teacher was in my dream, but i had no idea of the plot. also ive been keeping a dream journal to help.

      a few questions.

1.is a week too early to expect any good results of trying to have more vived dream recall?
2.would me not having a repetitive sleep cycle (ie; going to bed at the same time every night.) affect my recall abilitys?
3.would my mom waking me up every morning have anything to do with why im not having as good a recall?
      4. any tips or suggestions for a begginer?
      5. would it be good to get into a good sleeping habit, like going to bed at 10 every night?
6.has anyone ever tried the method where you sleep for 6 hours, wake up for one hour, and then go back to bed? does it work?

sorry for all the questions, but im new to this and any help would be vastly appreciated.

      thanks in advance

      Alright... in order...

      1. It is very possible to have a lucid dream within the first week, especially if you have a lot of time to spend on it, however, if you don't have one real fast, don't give up. Your logical part of your brain has to learn how to recognize dreams. Then it can come out in your dreams.

      2. It's not as dependant on cycle as it is on how much time you allow yourself to dream. Your first 5 hours you will usually not have dreams. I have had most of my lucid dreams after five to seven hours.

      3. Yes. Next time she wakes you up abruptly, slap her.

      4. Keep up your dream journal, do your reality checks over and over throughout the day, and keep asking questions on the forum.

      5. As stated above, most of it relies on how much time you have to dream in REM state.

      6. Yes. Check out Wake initiated lucid dreams, or nap initiated lucid dreams. I've had a LOT of success with those.

I'm sorry that I am cutting this short. I will write more in a little bit, when I have more time.

      Keep dreaming!

hmmm nild, i think ive been very close to one of those i believe.

one time a few days ago i came home and took a nap around 3.

as far as i can remember it only lasted all of a few seconds until i was woken up.

it was the most vivid ive ever had but also the quickest.

it was of a screensaver (ironically) that was just panning around a keyboard/mac. i remember it in so much detail that i even remember there being jaggies lol.

but thanks for the suggestions, i will definitely have to tell my mother not to wake me up anymore. i think my biggest problem is that i go to bed pretty late and dont usually get as much sleep as i should. tonight i will be going to bed early and trying the sleep for 5-6 hours method.

Hey there and welcome to the forum!!

That was a good try on the NILD, and if you take sloth's advise to keep a DJ, you may have one sooner.

The first thing to understand about dreaming and LDing is that it depends on you. Everyone is different so it's hard to give cut and dried time frames.
But it sounds like you've got a good start on recall already. Are you keeping a dream journal? If so, you should be writing down even the little snippets of dreams that you remember. This may sound pointless, but you are actually training your mind to remember dreams so you can record them. Some people keep notebooks and a pen next to their bed, and some people use computer journals (like the DV Dream Journal forum, or some other document).

Maybe by having a regular sleep schedule, you will be more relaxed and have better results. But some of the best LDs happen late in the morning or during naps. So again, it depends.

Ask your mom to softly rouse you, then leave you alone. Keep your eyes closed and don't change positions. Concentrate very hard on what you were just dreaming. Write down anything you remember immediately afterwards.

      4. any tips or suggestions for a begginer?
Other than looking through the tutorials, not a whole lot, actually! Just have fun and try different things. Find something that works and improve on that.

See question 2's answer - pretty much the same.

You mean the WBTB technique, possibly also using the WILD technique as mentioned by sloth. Yes, I've done WBTB and had good results, but I'm not a very proficient WILDer.

      Good luck and have fun!

      ADORABLE banner, Burns! LMAO!!

I'm sending you my WILD recipe that I've sent to my adoptees. Maybe it will help... Or it will cause you to have a stroke. One of the two.

      Check your PMs.

so it seems that i had absolutely no recolection of my dreams i had last night. is that bad? not even one thing, i dont even remember dreaming. usually i at least remember having a dream. there must be something im doing wrong. also i got more than enough hours of sleep.

edit: good news, i just remember a little tiny tidbit of my dream. it was where my precious headphones got soaked in water. now this part especially sparks my interest because they kept on working. my subconcious was kind of like "thats not right" but i just didnt recognize the sign enough. also i slightly remember something about best buy, but whether or not it was actually in my dream i dont know.

      Of course it's bad. You're a failure!
LOL No no. You're doing fine.
Of course there are going to be days where you don't dream, or remember your dreams. Everyone has them. I don't care who you are. Don't get discouraged. You are doing fine. I promise. How many days have you been trying to have a lucid dream?
