      Creating new dreamsigns?

Is it possible to create our own new dreamsigns by thinking of something a lot in waking life, or do they tend to be outside of our control? Just a quick question.

I tried to do that (I used a STOP sign, common object, a simple shape, bright color, with letters, I thought it would be good). I had an LD soon after I decided this, and then I thought there must be a stop sign around, so I looked way down the street where I knew there was one. It happened backwards of how it was supposed to.

So I don't know! I might try that again now that you mention it.

Theoretically you can create dreamsigns, but I never heard of anyone successfully doing that.

Thinking about something in the RL is called "dream incubation" - indeed, you will see something resembling the object or the action you thought about in a dream. But then again, dream incubation is unpredictable, the results may not come right away, they may appear few days after the incubation and may be too subtle to notice right away. On top of that you have no control over the result. For example if I wanted a gun, it can be any gun and my dream self can do anything with it.

Thanks. I was actually referring to wanting to have Red XIII appear in my dreams and use that as a dreamsign. But I worry that even if he were to appear, I may not realize the dream. That tends to be a common problem with not realizing dreamsigns, so I'll just have to work at it.

My dream sign (in theory) is me not smoking cigarettes. I can tell that i HAD a dream by noticing that i didnt smoke a single cigarette in the whole course of what felt like hours. But i hear that overuse of dreamsigns will make them disappear, due to "correcting the flaw."

If you quit smoking, your DS would probably BECOME smoking!

hmmmmmmm that sounds like an interesting theory. I might have to try that for a week. Nice idea. It seems like there is no one way to create a dreamsign other than extreme change in behavior.

If you can do it for a week, you can do it forever. I'm sure there's a study showing that tar and nicotine decrease LD ability. If you haven't noticed, I'm preaching at you a little (to quit smoking!) And you get a good DS out of it, besides other benefits....it would be worth it.

OK I'll stop now. Let us know if it works.

You could take any new element that pops into your life and ask yourself "how would this get distorted/changed if it appears in a dream?", since it's likely to appear in some form. However, while in a dream seeing the element unaltered you might only get so far as thinking about how that thing will appear as a DS instead of recognizing it as such.
