      'dream recall is a skill

and just like any other skill,
the only way to get better is:
      practice
      practice
      practice'

i have heard this time and time again, but i still have irregular dream recall. i would say that it is mostly from the fact that i do not practice.
i find excuses not to write in my dream journal. i say i don't have enough time, i goto bed late and end-up rushing to work.
i think something that also needs to be said:
practice needs to be done with balance.

perhaps others of you like I am not able to immediately take to a new habit. I start it with good intentions and then burn out. has this happened to anyone else?
what are your suggestions for making the improvement of dream recall easier?

-here is the latest idea i intend to try on myself:
      have a dream calendar.
1.for each day that you wake up and remember a dream
give yourself one checkmark for the previous day
2.if you write it down at all give yourself two more checkmarks
3.if you don't have time to write it down, but speak it aloud to someone
      you get only one more.

at the end of your period: week/month/season
add your total points and see how you've done.
when you've reached a certain goal of points,
      reward yourself.

if you do this for long enough, you would be able to graph the data to see if you could
relate it to patterns or situations in your life.

Thats really not a bad idea at all. I mean i can see myself usinga calender for varouis things related to dreaming. Like: how many dreams recalled, lds, nights with no recal, and so on. Great Idea!

But the start point for any skill is your individual talent, and that differs
from person to person, so there is more to it then just practise.

      that is a good idea!

one of the key things to dream recall is plenty of sleep and motivation. since you sleep little and aren't motivated to write in your journal, it reduces your recall. hopefully a balanced out life and your calender can aid you! good luck

Whenever I wake up and remember a dream (usually at least once per night) I'll write it down unless I'm incredibly tired or the dream was so vague I would barely be able to put it into words. But you should really write down anything possible whenever possible because that's how your recall improves. I guess you just have to excercise it almost like a muscle.

Well, I just don't remember my dreams long enough, i remember it for less than a minute and then the memory fades away... I don't have the time to write it down in my journal, I think i'll put my journal right next to my bed, but I would like to know if there are any techniques to remember it longer?

gezus, if you're having troubling writing it all down during that minute of remembrance, try a tape recorder instead. But make sure you speak clearly and slowly into it so you understand what you're saying when you play it later!

I use a recorder for quick summaries. Then I try to get it all down on paper when I get a few moments. I find it helps to record the date and time also.

I dont write my dreams down. I jsut enjoy, and remember them, and most importantly, rememebr how they make me feel. Just find what works for you. I dont need a dream journal.

i would find a tape recorder exceedingly difficult to use well. i rarely use my voice to speak in the mornings (occaisionally to sing along in the car), especially since the sun is taking so long to get up these days. Any efforts I would have with a tape recorder would sound like they were spoken through a pillow, which they probably would be ~;)

On the plus side, the calendar is successfully started. Thanks for the cooments all. and for the suggestions vertical horizon, I think it would be good to gather as much relevant data as I can, if for no other reason to have more time thinking about dreaming-related topics.

gezus, thus far I have learned: To recall, snooze is a killer. Once you've returned to dreamland, the ones from before can start to disappear (unless you've been able to get re-entry to a previous theme). I would suggest even just a few keywords to jog your memory later. Complete sentences are sometimes too long.

lucid apple, I disagree with you there. I feel that we are all capable of any level of skill, it is just how hard one is willing to work at it. True, some may have natural aptitudes for things, but if so, all can be accomplished by practice over time. the time would just differ in length due to each start point.

The dream calendar idea sounds great, I might try it. I could probably do with something to help my recall.

I would use a tape recorder too, but I can hardly speak at all in the morning! For some reason, I just kind of croak.

      Success!!

The dream calendar seems to have helped!
My score is much lower than I would like it, but still a higher score than it was before starting it ~;)
The other morning I had my first LD after joining these forums. It was fairly short, my dreamsign was
getting tackled but not feeling the bodily effects of motion. I usually lose it the moment I become lucid,
but this time I flew (with the feeling of motion/inertia this time) back to a previous scene from that dream.

However, something else that might be contributing was the purchase of a silk pillow 3 days prior to this LD.
I am calling it my 'dream pillow' as I start sleeping on my other pillows and usually end up switching to it
during the course of the evening.

Is anyone else trying the calendar idea in any form? Or, what is everyone's opinion upon the amount pillows
can help you with your recall?
