Waking up to write in dream journal?

How many people try to write down in their dream journal in between REM cycles at night? And if you do, how do you manage to do it - I don't remember waking up at all in the night, even though I must do. What methods do you use to manage to get yourself to write down your dreams in the middle of night-time?

I have a book and pencil beside my bed. When I wake for WILD i just jot down what I can remember.
The next morning I read what I have written and then fill in the details as I remember them.

I guess for some people the last thing you want to do at 5am is write aha

So do I, but I don't consciously wake up anyway in the middle of the night (or not that I can remember) to write in it. That's what I need help with; I can't work out how other people do it.

I have my laptop by my bed and use a microphone to record my dreams. It still takes determination to get up and do it even then, but it really helps with having DILDs later in the night.

maybe drink a lot of water before bed. or recite to yourself "i will be aware of each time i awake from a dream" every so often.

I use an alarm to wake up and the last time I woke up, I just recorded the dream using my cellphone. The mic idea is a good one though

I'll try using auto-suggestion tonight, and drink a couple of glasses of water before I go to sleep! Don't know whether it will work or not though. Does dream recall get easier the more you remember them?

Recall definately does improve when you write your dreams down, try to include as much detail as possible!

I started my dream journal five days ago, and waking up is definitly key for recalling my dreams.

I've found that when I was able to wake from my first dreams, and write them down, waking up after that became completely natural. this is probably because I made it a point to associate positive emotion with remembering the dreams. So my advice is when writing your dreams down in the middle of the night think "This is a very good thing that I have awaken to write down my dreams!" doing so will let your sub-concious mind know that it is imperritive that you wake up to remember your dreams.

as for waking up to remember your dreams for the first time (in order to initiate the process) I drank alot of pop and water before going to bed, thus forcing myself to awake in order to urinate. once awake, I did as I had said prior. worked with %100 positive result for me!!

I do this every night, by way of autosuggestion: "I will wake up after every dream period, and perfectly remember my dreams."

I guess it's become so routine for me that I just automatically write dreams down in my journal whenever I find myself aware and in my bed. I keep pencil and paper beneath my pillow, by the way.

Drinking water before bed really helps dream recall. You are uncomfortable because of your bladder and therefore will awake. You are most conscious at the peak of your dream cycle, so will wake up then. I keep a carafe of water by bedside and drink 300ml every dream cycle. Rinse and repeat. Waking up directly from your dreams REALLY aids in recall.

Keeping a 2 liter of Coca-Cola (or your favourite caffeinated beverage) by your bedside helps you write. After you would wake up, you take a swig to keep you awake enough to write your dreams.

Just my 2 cents,
