Success with recalling after starting a dream journal

What effect did starting a dream journal have on your recall? And why is it neccessary to keep a dream journal in order to have lucid dreams? I have had a lucid dream in two weeks and i usually have 1 or 2 a week, sometimes more, i'm on a little dry spell. Oh yeah, keeping a journal really worked for me in improving my recall.

Well when I woke up I saw my DJ sitting next to m, and that made me think about my dreams, and I remember! Keeping a DJ is important for the reason above. also if you write a dream down at like 2:00 A.M. and wake up at 9:00 A.M. you might not have remembered that dream at 2:00 A.M.

DJ helped me a ton. Just the idea of waking up to recall and record your dream made me remember them.
Keeping a journal to write down something that you never remember might seem silly, but it does somehow help your mind recall them dreams.

The mistake I often did in the beginning was waking up with a dream in my mind and deciding I'll "sleep on it" and waking up in the morning remembering having remembered a dream, but nothing about it

So, like Mancon said, it helps you remember (and also differentiate) different dreams throughout the night.

I remembered about 2 or 3 dreams a month, if not even that and they were very very hard to remember. I started my DJ awhile ago after finding this site and wow incredibly I was having more than one dream a night when I had enough sleep and clear vivid ones that I actually remembered. So It has helped me a lot. Most people say they don't need them others say they do, it's a personal choice really. If you have a metal box for a mind and can store anything in it and remember then that's good. But a DJ really has helped me a lot :]

Oh yeah one thing to, don't make a mistake like i did yesterday. Don't wait later in the day to write your dreams down in your journal because you'll forget, i only remembered one of my two dreams that i had the night before, i waited almost 30 minutes after i woke up to write my dreams down, but i only remembered one so i wrote just one down. I had the other dream in my mind for a little while to.

I imagine the very act of writing down dreams attaches more significance to them in your mind, which makes your subconscious pay more attention to them- increasing recall.

i had a lucid within a week of starting a DJ. I've always had fairly good recall though. My theory is that when you consciously go through the details of a dream memory, lots of other dream memories can flood back because of the coordination of the brain. Also remembering dreams while awake sort of builds some bridge between dreaming and conscious. That bridge remains there while we are asleep and helps us engage our consciousness which is otherwise inactive. This is all speculation, but i find that we rarely perform habitual tasks in dreams e.g. taking medication, using the computer etc. To create greater correspondence between your actions and awareness in waking life (such as RCs) and dreams I think some mental bridge needs to be built.
