How to remember your dreams (61 % succes!)

First of all, sorry for my English xD
Dream recall pretty important huh? It's really the first you must learn when you learn lucid dreaming.
Because you need to remember if you were lucid or not xD but the recall also make you more aware of your dreams and if you are more aware in general you also start to become aware of your micro awakenings, and then you can DEILD or WBTB without an alarmclock for example.
Anyway, this method helped approximately eight out of thirteen people in this thread (61% :shadewink:) :

Ok here's how you do it:

1. Wake up, try to remember your dreams ...
2. Do your every day things, go to school, work and so on
3. When you are back at home try to remember your DAY, all the details, the people you met, the activities you performed and so on.
4. Write it down or just review it in your head (it works best if you write it down) or do it Jake Sully style and record it in a videolog.
Write down your dream in the same detail that you want to remember your dreams.
5. Go to sleep (Affirm to remember your dreams)
6. (Become Lucid xD)
7. Wake up and remember your dreams

Give this method three days atleast. I hope this help all the people who struggle with dream recall.
But as I said this doesn't only help you with your recall, it makes you more aware in your dreams and makes it easier to become lucid.

I've heard of a lot of people talking about this already, and i think the DV staff has taken notice. I'm pretty sure they call it a waking journal, and there might be some stuff on it elsewhere

Agreed, I have seen this identical method mentioned several times before on this site, but still it is effective and is helpful to those who are struggling or looking to improve dream recall.

Wait, so, you write down the events of your day. I already keep a journal I write in daily. Its more of a thought journal thing though. How much detail should be described in the events that took place in the day? Can it be just like:
Woke up - got dressed
Ate crunchy nut cereal
Went to the bathroom and brushed my teeth
Put shoes on and packed bag
listened to ipod
Went downstairs and talked to sister by bus stop
Caught bus to school
Arrived to contact on time
English - 2 students oral presentations, essay prep
IT - talked to Lara and Mika bout homes and family and people in school
Philo - Mika and Elli's speech - joking round with jess - task sheet - neon indian
recess - saw nurse, made jess blood donation apointment, talked bout vegetarians and iron, ate shapes, common room
Wk Pl - computers, forums, em's pills
Sci - Jess' broken shoes, test revision, Ms Goudy illustration
lunch - drousy em, chicken sandwhich, randoms ipod music, ping pong
Art - tlked to Julian bout his art, showed teacher plans, em listened to Foals TLF
Bus home listening to AnCo
walking home - looking at birds and sky
no more salmon in fridge! ate gnocci and drank lemonade watched the Notebook
Forums and networking on computer - listening to Foals TLF
Dinner - lamb and vegetables
more computer - forums and networking
PRESENT

Sorry to take up so much but is that right? I can start doing that in a journal if thats right... and this improves recall and lucid dreams?

Write it down in the same way that you want to remember your dreams in. For example if something unusual happend or so, but you can also see this thread were I wrote an example in the first thread http://www.dreamviews.com/community/...ad.php?t=93005

After writing that down here, I remembered a dream from last night more vividly then I have in a few days. Thanks for the recall tip.

This actually worked great. Had my first LD ever last night after doing the whole waking journal thing for a week and a half.
Didn't last long, but I'm glad that I finally was able to have one.

I must not understand it correctly, im my mind this technique is made to improve your memory right. I mean I have never been lucid but remember the dreams and actually be lucid seems to be 2 differents things right.

For exemple after done 1 months of the lucid dream journal i have a very good dreams recal ( 2 or 3 per nights) but i m unable to awaken in the course of my dreams.

Is this technique actually for me at the moment ?

Well, I'm kind of a little confused on how much detail I should go into.
For example:
This was how my trip to the pool went:
1. I woke up and ate breakfast. I put my bathing suit on, got into the car, and drove to the pool. I stayed there for about 6 hours laying out in the sun and swimming, then I decided that I felt tired. So I got up, and went home. I took a shower once I got back and ate dinner. Then I prepared for bed.
OR
2. I woke up at around 8:30 and went downstairs and ate cereal for breakfast. I kissed my mom good morning. We talked about school and stuff. I then fed my little brother his breakfast. Then I went upstairs, and got on the computer a bit. Then I went downstairs and I told my parents that I would go to the pool. They said that that would be fine. So I went back upstairs and I slipped on my bathing suit and cover up, and grabbed my beach bag. I went to the bathroom. Then I walked down the stairs and got into my car. I rode for 10 minutes, then we came to the pool. I went and sat in my favorite chair outside. I put my stuff down and jumped in the pool. After practicing my swimming a bit, I tanned for an hour, then ate a lunch of a hamburger and coke. Then I tanned for 2 more hours. I jumped in the pool, met up with my friend Anna, and we tanned for maybe an hour or so. Then I got out of the pool, dried off, waved goodbye, and hopped into my car. I then came home and took a shower. After that I ate supper and got myself ready for bed. For about another 2 hours I was on the computer, then I went to bed.

Which one of the two is better to write? Short and sweet, or a lot of details? I wanna know because I'm not sure if I will remember a ton of dreams tonight or not.

Try to see this waking journal as a dream recall pracctise.

The more you remember of your day the more you remember of your dreams.
If you write very detailed you soon will remember your dream in very much detail.
You don't allways have to write down everything, but if you do the dream recall process becomes stronger. Think that your brain is like a muscel xD

Hiya, I just thought of the question this morning, and I haven't been able to remember any dreams for about 3 nights straight.
What if you can't remember all of your days events?

You should atleast remember something, but if you don't try to write down some dayfragments xD, but don't worry you can try the next day instead.

Haha, that's really cool. First I've heard of something like this, but the theory behind it is incredibly sound.

I'll be sure to give it a shot if I ever have recall problems. Fat chance of that happening, though. *knocks on wood*

Your post just made me remember how I got from remembering no dreams at all to remembering 4 to 6 dreams in a night! It was kind of like you said, doing a waking-life journal, but it had a detail that I belive is important: you have to do it backwardly! This is probably the hardcore mode. lol :shadewink: I used to do it when I was laid in bed, before doing my "I shall become lucid and stuff" mantras. I wouldn't write it down, though.

Simply put, try going backwards from what you just did to what you did right after you woke up this morning. It is actually much harder.

For exemple:
I took a bath and brushed my teeth. Before that I entered the dreamviews forum and posted in *this* thread. Before that I ate a very good sandwich. BT I finished my report about the coordination complexes experiments. BT I played some Mass Effect 2 on PC. BT I worked on the report. BT I watched Brazil's game(uuuuhuuuuuu!). BT I was already working on the report. BT I brushed my teeth because BT I had lunch. BT I studied some themodynamics. BT I brushed my teeth. BT I had breakfast. BT I was lazyly waking up and trying to recall forgotten dreams :(. Damn this is hard!

Anyway, now that you reminded me of this method, I'll try to do it daily again!
