I have had many vivid dreams, very few lucid dreams, and even fewer dreams in which i had lucid control, however i have identified some dream signs. I tend to have lots of mundane dreams that are commonplace and quite boring, so usually, the more vivid my dreams, the more likely i am to become lucid. By far the most powerful dream sign for me is fire. Fire always looks much different in a dream. It flickers too much or too little or abnormally, is more unpredictable and just looks surreal to me. Often times i see a lot of other colors in the fire, such as green, or purple, and blue, but the most emotionally dramatic color i see in the fire is always white. Sometimes the white from the fire flashes or shoots up in the sky and explodes like some kind of bottle rocket. THe fire is not the same in every dream and is not always this vivid, however when i see fire in my dreams it usually alarms me and arouses questions about reality:
How did this fire get started. Why does the fire look so strange? Am i drugs and or hallucinating? How did i get here?
After realizing i have no answers to these questions, because i usually can't remember how i got there or have no logical answers that make sense, and i realize that i haven't taken psychedelic drugs, then i realize i must be dreaming. HOwever I can recall fiery nightmares that involve some kind of dire emergency and even situations involving the apocalyptic holocaust of entire cities and people trying to escape the spreading destruction and fireballs raining from the sky. Frankly, i was too panicked during these kind of nightmares to become lucid. I have not yet cultivated that kind of skill. I'm definitely at the beginner/novice stage.
Another Dream sign is water. Being in water, swimming, or seeing large bodies of water, rain, etc. It always feels wierd and i usually do not experience any of the downsides of being in water. For example i'll be almost immediately dry after getting out of water. Or In one instance i wrecked a car into water after a massive police chase, and the car filled up with water as i was locked in it and then i realized i could breathe - then i realized i was dreaming and broke out of the car and spent the rest of the magnificent dream swimming around really fast, chasing fishes and looking at coral reefs, searching for mermaids, which i never found ):
However, there was another dream which was extremely vivid and was one of those kinds of nightmares that are so vivid and bizarre, you don't mind having them because you're so entertained and tripped out the next morning. Most of the nightmare i was hiding on a ship during a storm at night. The waves kept splashing up onto the boat. There was a battle between mideval crusaders and villagers fighting on the boat, and another smaller boat, and people treading water screaming for their life in the water. For most of the dream i was just a passive observer, and there was little emotional connection to the dream, except for brief moments of terror and shock. Throughout the dream, the battle weened and waned in intensity. At one particularly intense part, there was a larger man in a large old looking mideval suit of armor with a long white cloth over his chest and backside, bearing a red cross in the center of his chest. He swam around the many of the screaming villagers and fellow crusaders and pushed their heads under water as they screamed, drowning them slowly, with much struggle. I also recall lots of blood in the water which made intricate patterns and spread rapidly and then dispersed pretty quickly, the way cream mixes into black coffee when it is poured in and then stirred. The contrast between blood and water was hypnotic. Not at all realistic. There were also horses swimming in the water that were scratching the side of the boats with their hoofs as if they were cats scratching on doors. I remember being found and was terrified but they did not kill me because they were looking for me and wanted me alive. And the next and last thing i remember is I'm in a dark castle lit by massive candles and MY DOG, a small golden retriever, is in royal robes wearing a crown sitting on some decadent throne. He is massive with a deep voice and he is commanding me to do things, none of which i can remember. This entire dream was extremely bizarre and i remember being confused throughout because i consciously understood the dream was bizarre and did not understand what was happening but could not become lucid.
So in my experience, having an exceptionally vivid dream and seeing a dream does not guarantee lucidity unless you RECOGNIZE and identify it as a dream sign. What's important is to remember that dream and the signs, and then in the future you'll have better awareness while you're dreaming.
